The purpose of this article is to share the consequences of a study which focused on the communication or discourse on the principle of controversy in political education and its implications. In the light of the aim, this study identifies following themes: debate on the principle of controversy, possibilities and limitations of inclusive political education, and strategies for applying the principle of controversy. The result of this paper can be stated as follows: First, from the debate on the principle of controversy we can draw the generalization that the debatable themes and positions are considered as more open-ended than the other non-debatable. Second, from inclusive perspective we have to pay more attention to emotional aspects in controversy-oriented political education. Third, regarding the lesson strategies applying the principle of controversy, it is necessary to consider the basic relevant questions by distinguishing lesson plan and concrete translation into action or practice.

이 글의 목적은 논쟁성의 원칙에 관한 담론과 함의를 살펴보는 데 놓여 있다. 본고에서 주장하고자 하는 핵심적인 사항은 몇 가지 명제로 정식화하여 다음과 같이 제시할 수 있다. 첫째, 논쟁성의 원칙에 관한 논쟁에서 도출할 수 있는 일반화는 논쟁적으로 토론해야 하는 주제와 입장에 관해서는 가능하면 토의의 결과가 아직 열려있는 상태에서 논의해야 하지만, 논쟁적으로 토의해서는 안 되는 주제와 입장은 가능하면 분명한 교육적인 목표를 갖고 논의해야 한다는 것으로 진술할 수 있다. 둘째, 논쟁교육의 가능성과 한계를 포용적 관점에서 살펴볼 때, 사회정치적인 주제와 질문을 다루는 학습의 과정에서 정서적 측면에 특별히 유의할 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 정서적 측면을 완전히 무시하거나 소홀히다룰 경우 참여자에게 심리적으로 지나친 부담으로 작용할 수 있기 때문이다. 셋째, 논쟁성의 원칙을 적용한 수업방안을 모색하는 데 있어서는, 정치교육이 추구하는 발달의 방향(즉, 복합성의 증가)을 염두에 두고, 수업계획과 수업실행으로 구분하여 검토할 필요가 있으며, 이 맥락에서 제기되는 기본적인 질문을 지속적으로 성찰해야 할 도전으로 간주하는 것이 바람직하다.
