The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural causalities among such independent variables and mediators as social capital, Korean language competence, and career awareness adaptability, which are known as principal factors affecting school achievement in adolescents with migrant backgrounds, and their direct and indirect effects. The expected results from the review and work can be largely divided into three categories. To answer these questions, the data from approximately 654 adolescents with migrant backgrounds in the sixth (for ninth-graders) Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute were analyzed. The data were processed analysis by using SPSS and AMOS programs. This study obtained the following results: First, social capital within school, Korean language competence, and career awareness adaptability directly affected school achievement in the adolescents with migrant backgrounds. Social capital within the household indirectly affected school achievement through the medium of career awareness adaptability. Second, Korean language competence failed to serve as a mediator on the association between social capital and school achievement and only directly affected school achievement in adolescents with migrant backgrounds. Third, each of social capital within the household and social capital within school indirectly affected the association with school achievement through the medium of career awareness adaptability in adolescents with migrant backgrounds. The results of this study have confirmed the need to lay emphasis on the inter-variable association and cooperation as well as on the independent effects of the variables required to develop a plan for improving school achievement among adolescents with migrant backgrounds. Consideration can be given to customized educational support for each type because the relationships among social capital, Korean language competence, career awareness adaptability, and school achievement can depend on the backgrounds and characteristics of adolescents with migrant backgrounds. It is expected that they can play crucial roles in laying the foundation for relieving multiple disadvantages from adolescents with non migrant backgrounds.

이 연구의 목적은 이주배경청소년의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로 알려진 사회적 자본, 한국어 능력, 진로인식 수준 간의 구조적 관계를 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 한국청소년정책연구원에서 수행한 「다문화청소년 패널조사」 자료 가운데 6 차(중3) 자료에 응답한 654명의 이주배경청소년을 연구의 대상으로 삼았으며, SPSS, AMOS 통계 프로그램을 사용하여 분석을 진행하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 이주배경청소년의 학교 내 사회적 자본, 진로인식 수준은 학업성취에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었으며, 가정 내 사회적 자본은 진로인식 수준을 매개로 하여 학업성취에 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 이주배경청소년의 사회적 자본과 학업성취 간의 관계에서 한국어 능력은 매개변인의 역할을하지 않은 것으로 나타났으며, 학업성취에 미치는 직접적인 영향도 이 연구에서는 확인되지 않았다. 셋째, 이주배경청소년의 가정 내 사회적 자본, 학교 내 사회적 자본 각각이 학업성취 간의 관계에서 진로인식 수준을 매개로 학업성취에 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 결과는 이주배경청소년의 학업성취를 향상시킬 수 있는 방안을 마련하기위해 필요한 변인들의 독립적인 영향도 중요하지만, 변인 간의 연계·협력이 중요하다는 것을 보여주었다. 그리고 이주배경청소년의 사회적 자본, 한국어 능력, 진로인식 수준과 학업성취 간의 관계가 비(⾮)이주배경청소년과 다를 수 있다는 점에서 맞춤형 교육을 지원할 필요가 있다는 점을 시사한다.
