Existing studies limit the experience of guardians using lnursing homes to guilt and family conflicts. Thus, this study explored the experience of nursing home use by guardians related to physical and emotional conditions of the elderly, focusing on the facility services provided to the elderly. For this purpose, a qualitative research method, in-depth interviews, was used. The study participants included a total of 27 family members whose spouses or parents were admitted to nursing homes. Giorgi(1985)’s phenomenological method was used to analyze the data and the results showed that 116 meaning units, 12 emerging themes and 4 essential themes were discovered. The essential themes included ‘they do the work I can’t do,’ ‘the care is better than nursing homes,’ ‘I use it because I am mostly satisfied,’ and ‘I feel somewhat heavy-hearted.’ The themes resulted with ‘another home that's better than home in terms of care, but emotionally regrettable’. Based on the research results, improvement of staffing standards for caregivers, maintenance training for caregivers, volunteer priority linkage with small-scale facilities, necessity of meeting with guardians through proper visitation operation in the midst of a prolonged pandemic.

기존 연구들은 요양원을 이용하는 보호자의 경험을 죄책감, 가족갈등에 국한시켜 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 입소 노인에게 제공되는 시설서비스에 초점을 맞추어 노인의 신체·정서적 상태와 관련된 보호자의 요양원 이용 경험 을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 심층 인터뷰를 활용한 질적 연구방법을 사용하였다. 연구참여자는 자신의 배우자나 부모가 요양원에 입소한 가족원 총 27명이었다. Giorgi(1985)의 현상학적 연구방법으로 접근하여 자료를 분석한 결과 12개의 드러난 주제, 4개의 본질적 주제를 구성하였다. 본질적 주제는 ‘내가 할 수 없는 일을 해 줌’, ‘케어 면에서 요양병원보다 나음’, ‘대체로 만족하기에 이용 중임’, ‘마음 한구석은 무거움’이었고, 이러한 4개의 본질 적 주제는 ‘집보다 케어 면에서는 낫지만, 정서적으로는 아쉬운 또 하나의 터전’으로 귀결되었다. 이상의 연구결 과를 바탕으로 요양보호사 인력배치 기준의 개선, 요양보호사에 대한 보수교육 시행, 자원봉사자의 소규모 시설 로 우선 연계, 코로나 장기화 속에서 제한적 면회 방식 운영에 관한 정책적, 실천적 제언을 하였다.
