Oral history i n Korean society has been a t the center of the politics of memory concerning modern and contemporary history. The 5.18 memory is a main example of coun ter-memories that have been incorporated i n to the official history. 5.18 oral testimonies from personal recollections formed a collective memory which became a counter-memory against the military government’s official memory. This article seeks to situate 5.18 memory in the context of the flow of Korean society’s struggle of memory and illustrates the features of politics of memory. It also reconstructs the transitional process of the community of 5.18 memory to the commemorative community since the 1990s. While doing so, it deals with the problems and conflicts accompanied by the institutionalization and localization of 5.18 memory. It argues that the 5.18 community of commemoration should become a community of record by constructing the oral archives of 5.18. Oral testimonies of 5.18 community of memory have been scattered in several local institutes which need to be catalogued and serviced through the oral archives including various and multiple voices of the 5.18 participants. Lastly, it suggests that the 5.18 community of memory should overcome the problems of institutionalization and localization, and make an effort to consolidate other communities of memory against state violence, marching toward the memory solidarity.

구술사는 한국 사회에서 근현대사 관련 기억 투쟁의 중심에 서 있다. 1980년대 말 부터 억압된 개인들의 사적 기억들이 집합 기억을 형성하면서 군사정부의 공식적 기 억에 저항하는 대항 기억이 되었다. 이 대항 기억들 중 공공 기억이 되어 기억 투쟁을 통해 공식적 역사에 편입된 대표적인 것이 바로 5.18 기억이다. 이 글은 한국사회의 기억 투쟁의 흐름 속에서 5.18 기억을 자리매김하고 기억의 정치학의 특징들을 살펴 본다. 그리고 1990년대부터 구술 증언을 통하여 형성된 5.18 기억공동체가 특별법 제정을 통해 기념공동체가 되는 과정을 정리해본다. 또한 이 과정에서 대항기억에서 공식적 기억이 된 5.18 기억에서 드러난 기억의 제도화와 지역화의 문제점을 지적한 다. 그리고 구술 증언으로 시작된 5.18 기억공동체가 현재 여러 기관에 흩어져 있는 구술 자료들을 목록화하고 구술 아카이브를 구축하여 다양성과 다성성을 담보하는 기 록공동체로 거듭날 것을 제안한다. 마지막으로 5.18 기억이 지역화에서 벗어나서 국 가폭력에 맞서는 기억공동체로서 다른 기억공동체들과의 연대를 도모할 것을 제안 한다.
