Purpose : This research empirically compares the payment risk of Open Account(OA) and Document against Acceptance(DA) in the international trade to provide the academia and practical field of international trade with a solid insight on the riskiness of the two payment methods. Research design, data, methodology : The paper compares the proxy data on the riskiness of the two payment methods; the default ratio, claims ratio, and recovery ratio of the Korean exports with OA and DA which have been covered by the export credit insurance program ‘Short-term Export Insurance. The paired t-test is adopted to compare the proxy data in this research. Results : The result implies that OA is statistically safer than DA in payment settlement with lower default ratio and claims ratio while having the same recovery ratio. Conclusions : This result is different to the generally accepted view that OA is risker than DA which has a collection process through banks in the payment settlement in the international trade.

이 논문은 단기수출보험에 부보된 두 결제조건 OA와 DA의 수출대금 미결제위험을 실증적으 로 비교한다. 단기수출보험에 부보된 일반수출 거래의 사고율, 보상률, 회수율 등 위험지표를 대응표본 t-검정을 통해 분석한 결과 OA가 DA에 비해 더 안전한 결제조건으로 추정된다. 이 결과는 환어음이 발행되고 은행채널을 통해 수출대금이 추심되는 DA거래가 OA거래에 비해 더 안전하다고 여기는 일반적인 인식과 배치되는 결과이다. 즉, 환어음이 수출대금 결제가능 성을 제고시키는 기능을 발휘하지 못하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 한편, 두 결제조건의 결제구조 외에도 OA와 DA의 결제조건을 선택한 각 거래의 특성과 수입자의 신용도 차이로 인해 사고 율, 보상률, 회수율 등 위험지표에 차이가 나타날 수 있을 것으로 추정된다.
