The Korean Protestant churches have experienced a decrease in church members from the 2000s on. Some do not go to church anymore, the others do not even confess their faith in God and Christ. Some of them might go to churches that have different structures or systems from the institutional churches. Korean Protestants have left their church for a variety of reasons: distrust of Christianity, complaints about churches, ethical problems of pastors, conflicts between members, personal belief or situation, and so on. It is revealed that there are already a million unchurched Christians in the 2010s. Now the number is doubled. In this regard, this study asks whether the Pentecostal Movement and the Discipleship Training of the Korean Protestant churches have any relationship with the unchurched Christians. The relationship between the unchurched and the two movements has hardly been scrutinized although the two movements have affected the Korean Protestant churches in many ways for a long time. The results of the movements are an increase of church members, transferring of membership horizontally from one church to the other, an emphasis on active and personal spiritual experience, the practice of individual devotion, unity among the Korean Protestant churches, raising lay Christian leaders, varied lay ministry, systematization of the educational programs, and so on. The two movements are not a factor that encouraged Christians to leave their churches. This study argues that the Korean Protestants are trained and equipped, by the two movements, to leave their church when they have skepticism and disappointment of their churches and pastors.

2000년대에 들어 한국 개신교회가 맞고 있는 변화 중 하나는 탈교회화이다. 성도 가 특정 교회에 소속되지 않거나 기존 제도권 교회에 출석하지 않는 것에서부터 기독 교 신앙을 고백하지 않는 수준에 이르기까지 탈교회화는 다양한 양상으로 나타나고 있다. 이미 2010년대에 교회에서 이탈하는 성도의 수가 백만 명 정도 되는 것으로 집 계되었으며, 현재는 이백만 명 이상으로 추산된다. 성도가 교회에서 이탈하는 원인으 로 언급되는 것은 기독교 전체에 대한 불신, 소속 교회에 대한 불만, 목회자의 윤리적 문제, 동료 성도와의 갈등, 개인적 사정 등 다양하다. 이러한 상황에서 본 연구는 과 거부터 현재까지 한국교회에 질적, 양적 변화를 이끈 성령 운동과 제자훈련은 탈교회 화와 어떤 관계가 있는지 질문한다. 두 운동과 탈교회화의 관계에 관한 연구가 충분 수행되었다고 보기 어렵고, 영향력은 줄었지만 현재 진행 중인 두 운동의 의의를 탈 교회화와 관련해 비판적으로 돌아볼 필요가 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 두 운동이 탈 교회화를 의도했거나 자극한 직접적 요인이라고 할 수 없지만, 두 운동의 영향이 현재 한국개신교의 탈교회화와 관련이 있다고 주장한다. 성령 운동과 제자훈련은 성도 의 수적 증가와 수평 이동, 능동적이고 주관적 체험 강조, 경건 생활의 개인화, 교회 의 일치, 선교 활성화, 평신도의 지도자화, 평신도 사역의 확대, 교회 교육 프로그램의 체계화 등에 영향을 주었다. 본 연구는 이러한 영향 중 일부가 교회나 목회자 등에 대한 회의와 실망의 상황에서 성도가 기존 교단이나 교회를 떠날 수 있도록 하는 조 건을 형성시켰다고 주장한다.
