This study aimed to analyze identities of Japanese returnees and their views of “Chosen” in Konpeki in the Distance and Commemorative Magazines for the 70th and 80th anniversary. In Konpeki in the Distance of 1974, their criticisms of colonial policies at the time, and the questions about “co-education of Japanese and Korean” can be seen. On the other hand, it can also be seen that the editors tried to avoid negative portrayals as much as possible when compiling contributions by Korean alumni, in order to recall their alma mater in a positive light. In Commemorative Magazines of the 70th and 80th anniversary, the Japanese Alumni tried to ‘monumentalize’ the memories of Keijo Imperial University and record them, as the members are rapidly aging and the University has not had any graduations since 1945. On the other hand, the monument is a symbolic artifact about the memory of “co-education of Japanese and Korean” friendship by themselves. However, Korean alumni of Keijo Imperial University, who shared the joy of cultivating friendships beyond ethnic groups with them, is missing in the process of the their memorial project and the monument commemorative meeting. Against this backdrop, it was revealed that the former colony of “Chosen” was separated from identity of Alumni, accepting with resignation that their fates are shared with that of their vanishing alma mater, and recognizing the inherent instability of the “co-education of Japanese and Korean” higher education institution established in the colony.

본 논문은 경성제국대학과 그 예과의 총동창회에서 발간한 창립 50주년 기념지 􋺷감벽 저 멀리(紺碧遥かに)􋺸와 창립70주년・80주년 기념호 등 세 창립 기념집(記念集)을 토대로 일본 인 귀환자의 당대적 ‘조선’관과 그들의 정체성에 대하여 분석한 글이다. 1974년에 발간된 􋺷감 벽 저 멀리􋺸에는 식민지의 모교를 긍정적인 기억으로 호출하는 다수의 회고가 게재되었고, 특히 한국인 동창의 기고문에서는 발췌 방식과 편집부의 주석을 통해 ‘내선공학’의 부정적 기술을 가능한 회피하려는 흔적이 엿보인다. 그럼에도 불구하고 일부 일본인 동창의 기고문 과 한국인 동창의 게재문에서는 경성제대 출신 일본인의 ‘내선공학’에 관한 물음과 당시 식 민지 정책에 대한 비판적 회고가 나타나며 ‘내선일체’와 ‘경성제대’의 모순을 지적하고 있다. 창립 70주년・80주년 기념호에서는 졸업생 배출 단절로 인해 구성원이 노령화하여 더 이 상 동창회를 유지할 수 없는 슬픔을 노출하는 한편, ‘감벽’으로 표상된 경성제대의 기억을 ‘모뉴먼트’화하고 기록물로 ‘재생산’한다. 나아가 기념비의 비문에 나타나 있듯이 경성제대에 서 이루어진 ‘내선공학’이라는 식민지 기억과 체험을 ‘민족을 넘은 우정’이라는 문장을 통해 긍정하고 있다. 그러나 ‘민족을 넘은 우정을 배양하는 즐거움’을 함께 한 당사자에 해당하는 한국인 동창들은 모뉴먼트와 기념비 사업이 이루어지는 과정에서 부재한 상태로 남아 있었 다. 이러한 상황 속에서 일본인 동창들은 사라져가는 모교와 자신들의 운명을 동일시하는 체 념과 함께, 식민지에 세운 ‘내선공학’ 고등교육기관이라는 선천적인 불안정성을 자각하는 방 식으로 ‘조선’을 자신들의 정체성에서 분리해나갔다.
