Among arithmetic operations, multiplication and division require more abstract thinking than addition and subtraction. However, many elementary school students who are not yet familiar with abstract and formal thinking find it difficult to learn multiplication and division. Considering the characteristics of elementary school students who are accustomed to intuitive concepts and representations, it is essential to use visual models when teaching multiplication and division. Also, it is necessary to provide effectively visual models suitable for teaching and learning even in elementary mathematics textbooks. Accordingly, in this study we analyzed and compared the visual models presented in the multiplication and division units of elementary mathematics textbooks in Korea, the United States, and Singapore in terms of their types as well as functions. Based on the results of analysis, we suggested some implications for using visual models when planning and developing the elementary mathematics textbooks.

사칙연산 중 곱셈·나눗셈은 덧셈·뺄셈에 비해 더 추상적인 사고를 요구한다. 따 라서 아직 추상적·형식적 사고가 충분히 발달하지 않은 많은 초등학생이 곱셈과 나눗셈 학습에 어려움을 느낀다. 직관적 표현에 익숙한 초등학생의 특성을 고려할 때, 곱셈과 나눗셈 지도 시 시각적 모델의 활용은 필수적이다. 따라서 수학 교과서 에서도 교수·학습에 적합한 시각적 모델을 효과적으로 제시할 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구는 한국, 미국, 싱가포르 초등 수학 교과서의 곱셈과 나눗셈 단원에서 제시 되는 시각적 모델을 유형과 기능의 측면에서 비교 분석하여 각 교과서의 특성을 시각적 모델 측면에서 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 분석 결과에 기초하여 교과서 집필 시 시각적 모델의 제시 방향에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.
