The purpose of this research is to understand the life of Elizabeth Layton, who saved her life under depression and crisis through drawings, and the healing perspectives of her drawings from an art therapist’s point of view. Elizabeth Layton as a research subject, should be given significant attention and importance in art therapy field because she did not receive formal art education and yet showed that drawing can change life. This study applied a biographical approach of qualitative research, and analyzed her drawings and their healing perspectives based on various personal, public data and visual data. The results of this research are such that first, Elizabeth Layton’s chronology was provided and second, in her drawings, 1) art media and technique was ‘colored pencil and contour drawing’ and 2) subjects of her drawings were ‘personal themes’, and ‘social themes’, and third, the healing perspectives of her drawings were 1) emission of creativity, 2) recovery of her self and 3) transformation to social communication and connection from isolation. This research bears significant meaning in introducing Elizabeth Layton’s life and drawings to Korean art therapy field, and providing basic data for art therapy theory, practice, and education for art therapists by clarifying the healing perspectives of her drawings.

본 연구는 우울증이라는 삶의 고통과 위기의 상황에서 그림 그리기를 통해 자신의 삶 을 회복한 Elizabeth Layton의 삶과 그림의 치유적 의미를 미술치료사의 관점에서 이해 하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 연구대상인 Elizabeth Layton은 정식으로 미술교육을 받 지 않았지만 미술을 통해 삶이 변화될 수 있음을 보여주었기에 미술치료 분야에서 중요 하게 다루어진다. 본 연구의 연구방법으로는 질적 연구의 전기적 접근을 적용하였고, 개 인적 그리고 공적 기록문서와 다양한 시각자료들을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과로 첫째, Elizabeth Layton의 생애를 기술하였다, 둘째, Elizabeth Layton의 그림에서는 1) 매체와 기법은 ‘색연필과 컨투어 드로잉’이며, 2) 그림의 주제는 ‘개인적 주제’와 ‘사회적 주제’이 다. 셋째, Elizabeth Layton의 그림의 치유적 의미로는 1) ‘창조성의 발현’, 2) ‘고유한 자 기의 회복’, 3) ‘고립에서 사회적 소통과 연결로의 전환’이 도출되었다. 본 연구는 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 Elizabeth Layton의 삶과 그림을 소개하고 그녀의 그림의 치유적 의미 를 밝힘으로써 미술치료 이론과 실제, 그리고 미술치료사 교육을 위한 기초자료를 제공 하였다는데 의의가 있다.
