This research deals with the human-animal relations of the eighteenth century Choseon Korea represented in Seongho saseol(星湖僿說, The records on various things by Yi Ik) written by Yi Ik (1691~1763). Encyclopedic writings in the eighteenth century including Seongho saseol contain detailed descriptions of elites’ ideas and practices regarding animals. In (禽獸一路, The Way of Animal), (禽獸不知父, Animals do not remember their fathers), (貞燕, A faithful female swallow), (友鷄傳, The record of hen with sisterly affection), Yi Ik shows an anthropocentric view by praising swallows and hens in terns of their possession of human-like Confucian morals such as woman’s chastity and sisterly love. At the same time, Yi clarifies that the animal being with human-like behaviors is an exceptional case only and cannot be generalized as the overall features of its kind. Such clarification distinguishes the boundary between animals and human and makes the literary makes the strict distinction between animal and human and also makes the analogical use of animal difficult. In (食肉, Eating meat) and (索牛, Sacrificial cows), Yi discusses the issue of people’s right to eat animal, especially cows and dogs that people raised with care. While Yi Ik recognizes that animals have the right not to be consumed by human beings recklessly, he empahsizes the necessity that people cannot live without meat. In (養猛獸, Raising beasts>, (驅猛獸, Driving out beasts), and (獵猛獸, Hunting beasts), Yi supports the interests of humans upon the conflict of interests of humans and beasts.

이 연구는 이익(李瀷, 1691~1763)의 성호사설(星湖僿說)을 중심으로 조선 후기 지식인의 인간-동물 관계의 인식과 실제 관행의 일면을 살핀 것이다. 18세기를 전후하여 두드러진 백과사전적 집필은 동물에 대한 지식 인들의 인식과 경험을 풍부하게 담고 있으며 성호사설 역시 인간-동물 관계에서 유학자의 고민과 타협 지점을 보여준다. 이익은 <금수일로(禽獸 一路)>, <금수부지부(禽獸不知父)>, <정연(貞燕)>에서 특정 동물의 기존 이미지에 어긋나는 생물학적 특성을 밝힌다. 작가의 실제 관찰에 기반한 발견과 기록은 해당 동물을 기존 이미지에 의거하여 의인화하거나 비유하여 사용하기 어렵게 만든다. 한편 <식육(食肉)>과 <색우(索牛)>는 동물 생명의 가치와 육식에 관한 고민을 담고 있다. 이익은 인간의 현실적 필요를 들어 육식을 지지했고 유학자라고 할지라도 인(仁)의 원리에 따라 살 수 없음을 밝혔다. 동물과 인간 사이의 갈등은 <양맹수(養猛獸)>, <구맹수(驅猛獸),> <엽맹수(獵猛獸)>, <마정(馬政)>에서 다룬다. 이익은 인간의 생명과 재산을 보호하고 확장하기 위해 적극적인 맹수 사냥을 제안한다. 맹수는 인간에게 길러져도 순화될 수 없으며 인간과의 공존도 불가능하 다. 이러한 성정에 따라 맹수는 멸시와 비난, 조건 없는 퇴치의 대상이 된 다. 이익의 동물-인간 관계 인식과 실제 관행은 분명 인간중심적이다. 그러나 인간중심적 시각 안에서 실제 관행의 타협점을 제시한 이익의 저술은 현대의 생태환경 논의에 기여할 수 있겠다.
