The purpose of this research is to explore the movie Minari in the way of analyzing Korean-Americans’ diasporic emotions in the movie and how it has become a common empathetic emotion over personal experience. Minari is a movie that deals with how Korean immigrants struggled to settle in the state of Arkansas in 1980’s, and reveals the diasporic emotions of Korean immigrants. Unlike the lukewarm responses in Korea, the diasporic emotions of Minari have become a common empathetic emotions over the multiracial society in the United States often called as the melting pot, and made the members of the society go wild. Minari covers the diasporic emotions in immigrants’ characteristic of separation, assimilation and pioneering. It also is significant in that the movie is filmed with people’s common experiences living in those days, based on the personal experiences of Jacob’s family in separation, assimilation and pioneering.

본 연구는 영화 <미나리>의 분석을 통해 영화에서 드러나는 재미한인들의 디아스포라적인 정서를 분석하고, 그것이 어떻게 개인의 경험을 넘어 보편적인 공감의 정서로 변화할 수 있었는지를 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 영화 <미나리>는 1980년대 미국 아칸소 주에 정착한 한국이민자 가족의 고군분투를 다루며 미주한인들의 이주와 관련한 디아스포라적 정서를 잘 드러낸 작품이다. 국내의 미온적인 반응과 달리 멜팅팟이라고 불릴 만큼 다민족으로 구성된 미국사회에서 영화 <미나리>의 디아스포라적 정서는 그 사회 구성원들의 보편적인 공감요소가 되었고 사람들을 열광하게 한 요인이 되었다. 영화 <미나리>는 디아스포라적인 정서의 특징인 이민자들의 이산, 동화, 개척의 서사를 다루고 있다. 그리고 이것을 바탕으로 제이콥 일가의 체험을 개인적인 경험에서 당대를 살아가는 사람들의 보편적인 체험으로 만들었다는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.
