After briefly scanning the history of Korean American diasporic poetry, this paper examines the literary achievements of a few Korean American poets within the topography of Korean literature in English. Until now, in spite of its variety and complexity, Korean American diasporic poetry written in English has not garnered much critical attention beyond the discourse of ethnic identity and Korean-ness here in Korea. This paper, bearing the achievements of the earlier generations of the Korean American poetry, will note that poetic experiments of contemporary Korean American poets have been conducted in much more challenging manners and methodologies on language, theme, poetic forms and politics, diversifying the landscape of Korean diasporic literature as well as American poetry. Significant portions of this paper are given for the poems of Ed-Bok Lee and Don mee Choi, two prominent figures in the field of Korean American poetry. Exploring their poetic languages shattered in a pliable desire, this paper focuses on the ecological imagination of Lee, firstly. and then, the experimental energy taken from the workings of translation and visual images by Choi. For both Lee and Choi, poetry comes from the languages shattered, formed, and re-constructed in a pliable desire of diasporic subjectivity. In that sense, their poetry is composed of the languages of betweenness, forms of desire. Through the process of reading the newness of contemporary Korean American poetry, this paper aims at expanding the scope of Korean literary discourse beyond identity politics rooted in language and blood.

이 논문은 2000년 이후 영어로 발표된 재미 디아스포라 시를 조망하면서, 당대 세계문학의 지형도 안에서 한국계 미국 시인들이 미국문학의 장 안에서 거둔 문학적 성취를 한인문학이라는 큰 틀 안에서 가늠해본다. 영어로 된 재미 디아스포라 시들은 주제적, 형식적 측면에서 무척 다양하고 폭넓은 시 세계를 보여주고 있지만 지금까지의 재외 한인문학의 비평 담론에서 대개 이산(離散)의 삶 속에서 한국인이라는 민족적 정체성을 확인하는 방식에서 크게 벗어나지 못한 측면이 있다. 20세기 디아스포라 시 비평 담론이 대개 정체성의 시학에 초점이 맞추어졌다면, 본 논문은 2000년대 이후 다변화된 재미 한인들의 시 세계를 조망하면서 시의 언어와 주제, 형식의 문제에 있어 도전적인 방식으로 시의 실험이 진행되고 있음에 주목할 것이다. 이를 위해 최근 미국 시단에서 비평적 관심을 받고 있는 에드 복 리와 돈미 최 두 시인의 시를 선별하여 읽으면서, 미국과 한국, 영어와 한국어, 과거 세대와 현재 세대 등 역사의 틈바구니, 문학적 지형도, 미학적 형식 등 다양한 층위의 ‘사이’에서 탄생하는 시의 여러 얼굴을 살피고자 한다. 특히 이 두 시인에게 있어 부서지는 ‘갈망의 언어’는 부서짐으로써 다시 탄생하고 만들어지는 시의 언어이기에, 새로움을 낳는 갈망의 형식이 된다. 단일한 정체성의 시학을 넘어 관계에 대한 사유에 천착하는 생태적 상상력이 디아스포라 시에 어떤 새로움을 불러오는지, 또 번역과 창작을 오가는 작업에서 시인이 의존하고 또 의심하는 언어의 문제, 20세기의 전쟁을 작동시킨 정치적 이념을 시가 어떻게 재현하는지 등을 논의하면서 이 논문은, 영어로 창작된 한인문학에서 시의 ‘안과 밖’에 대한 논의의 폭을 언어적, 문화적, 미학적으로 확장하고 심화하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
