This study identifies the ethics and the transcendental modernity of hospitality shown by Korea's Donghak ideology. The ethical observance of hospitality inherent in our analysis of Donghak ideology is summarized in the following characteristics. Donghak shows a philosophy of lawless and unconditional ethics that does not presuppose God's rights, all laws and customs, rights, orders, and obligations of the nation and its people. In addition, the ethics of hospitality to the batter brings me a pleasant echo of brightness and joy, and makes me feel “the correspondence of heaven”. And self-education awareness is the establishment of self-reliance and the realization of personal ethics, and leads the people to the way of human liberation, where all individuals can become saintly beings. Finally, Donghak, which emphasizes human equality, shows the characteristics of alternative foresight as a reflection on the feudal and pre-modern social systems, religious faith, and philosophical ideas of the East and the West. Thus, Donghak is regarded as an avant-garde progressive idea that embodies the postmodernism “first philosophy is ethics.”

본 연구는 한국의 동학이 보여주는 환대(歡待)의 윤리성과 환대사상에 근거한 초근대성에 대한 규명이다. 그리고 본론에서 분석한 동학사상에 내재된 환대의 윤리적 준거들은 다음의 특징들로 귀결된다. 동학은 신권(神權), 국가와 민족들이 갖는 모든 법, 관습, 권리, 명령, 의무를 전제하지 않는 무법적이고 무조건적인 윤리철학을 보여준다. 아울러 타자에 대한 환대의 윤리는 나에게 밝음과 기쁨의 향유적인 반향을 불러오고, “하늘의 감응”을 체감하게 한다. 또한 자기교육을 통한 자각은 주체성 확립과 개인윤리의 실현이며, 모든 개개인이 존엄한 존재로서 성인군자가 될 수 있는 인간해방의 길로 민중을 인도한다. 마지막으로 인간평등을 강조하는 동학은 봉건적이고 전근대적인 동서양의 사회제도와 신앙, 전통철학에 대한 반성과 대안적 예지(叡智)를 담고 있다. 그리하여 동학은 “제일철학은 윤리다.”라는 포스트모더니즘적 명제를 선지적으로 구현하는 전위적인 진보사상으로 간주된다.
