Aristotle glorified the greatness of the content and form of tragedy in and established a very scientific and systematic theory on a tragedy. Therefore Greek tragedy has been the root of Western ideologies more than 2,500 years until now. From by Aristotle's , Greek tragedy took hold not only the Western philosophical genealogy and was also spread to the Eastern cultures. Now it is not an exaggeration that all actors around the world are performing stories written in the traditional context of ancient Greek tragic archetypes. In order to perform the realistic character of the tragedy, actors try to recall the most painful memory of their lives. Moreover actors try to embody the traumas of the characters which they have not experienced themselves so that they can create the most painful and miserable emotions we can not even imagine. For every stage repeated over weeks to months, the actors sacrifice their own bodies and minds to the theatrical work so that they can deliver the realistic pain of the characters from the tragedy. There are three things combined together like a Möbius strip: ‘Tragic story of the text’, ‘Characters of the tragedy’ and the ‘Performance of the actor who can't express their emotions outwards in order to avoid the exaggerated expression. For more than 2,500 years, nobody has been interested in curing the psychological pain of the actors. This study starts from the questioning if these relationship and environment is one of the reasons why actors have trouble escaping from the psychological difficulties. This study shows the 'traditionality of tragic texts based on Greek tragedy and the psychological characteristics of actors who play the characters of the tragic text'. Accordingly, this thesis aims to prove that the psychological difficulties experienced by actors are not personal issues of the actors by proving that 'the theory of Greek tragedy and Aristotle's Poetics, which advocates the tragedy, can affect the psychological difficulties experienced by actors'.

아리스토텔레스는 시학을 통하여 비극의 위대함을 예찬하였고 ‘비극’ 원리에 대한 합리적이고 논리적인 이론을 정립함으로써, 고대 그리스 비극은 2천 5백년이 넘도록 서양의 사상적 뿌리가 되어 지금에 이르고 있다. 아리스토텔레스의 시학으로 확고해진 그리스 비극의 철학적 계보는 서양뿐 아니라 동양으로까지 그 영역이 확산되었고 이제 전 세계의 배우들은 고대 그리스의 비극적 원형의 전통으로 창작되어지는 ‘비극적 주제의 텍스트’로 연기하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 비극의 등장인물을 실감나게 연기하기 위하여 배우는 자신이 겪은 과거의 가장 고통스러운 기억들을 끄집어낸다. 심지어 자기가 경험해 보지 못한 등장인물의 트라우마 조차 기꺼이 자기 것으로 받아들여야하기에 배우들은 상상 조차 할 수 없는 가장 끔찍하고 처참한 감정들을 만들어낸다. 매 공연마다 짧게는 몇 주, 길게는 몇 년에 걸친 작업환경에서 비극 속 등장인물의 고통을 관객에게 실감나게 전달하기 위하여 배우는 자기의 몸과 마음을 온전히 작품에 바친다. ‘뫼비우스의 띠’처럼 헤어 나올 수 없는 관계로 묶여있는 ‘텍스트의 비극적 주제’와 ‘비극의 등장인물’ 그리고 ‘겉으로 과장할 수 없어 내면으로 에너지를 향하게 할 수 밖에 없는 배우 연기’. 2천 5백년이 넘는 동안 배우의 내면 깊이 박힌 고통의 감정을 정화시켜내는 데에는 누구도 관심이 없었던 것이다. 이러한 관계와 환경이 배우들의 심리적 어려움을 벗어나지 못하게 했던 요인 중에 하나는 아니었을까? 본 연구자는 ‘그리스비극을 원형으로 하는 비극적 텍스트의 전통성과 그 비극적 텍스트의 등장인물을 연기하는 배우들의 심리적 관계’에 대하여 연구를 하였다. 이에 본 논문은 ‘그리스 비극과 그 비극을 옹호한 아리스토텔레스의 <시학>의 이론이 배우가 겪는 심리적 어려움에 영향을 줄 수 있음’을 증명함으로써 배우들이 겪고 있는 심리적 어려움이 배우 개인의 책임이 아님을 밝히고자 한다.
