This paper is a study on the image of water employed in a voice training method developed by Kristin Linklater, one of the most renowned modern voice educators. Since the 20th century, the use of images in voice training has gradually prevailed as a way to balance technical expressions and emotional freedom. Amid such movement, Linklater pioneered her independent voice training method differentiated from other voice training methodologies by its active use of images in all stages of her training. It is fair to say that the use of images is the key to Linklater's voice training. She presented various images that efficiently guide voice training, and among them, the image of water is continuously used to compare the sound itself and how the sound advances. This suggests that the image of water is effective for freeing the natural voice as advocated by Linklater. Therefore, approaching the image of water can offer an in-depth understanding of Linklater's voice training and contribute to increasing the effectiveness of training. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyze the characteristics and functions of the image of water presented in Linklater's voice training, based on Gaston Bachelard's theory of material imagination. To this end, this study first describes the concept of material imagination, materiality of image, and movement of image; then classify images of water used in Linklater's voice training into stagnant water, flowing water, and complex water; and lastly, analyze characteristics of each image and its functions in voice training. The study verified that each type of water images represents flexibility, softness, reflectiveness and liquidity as well as elevation and fall and that the voice training method of Linklater applying all these characteristics enables ease of body and allows participants to acquire economic and healthy use of voice most effectively. In this regard, this study on images may serve as a basis for devising new methodologies of voice training incorporating images for actors.

본 논문은 현대의 대표적 음성 교육자인 크리스틴 링크레이터(Kristin Linklater)가 그의 훈련법에서 사용한 물의 이미지에 관해 연구한 것이다. 20세기 이후 기술적 표현과 감정적 자유의 조화를 목표로 한 현대의 음성 훈련에서 이미지는 하나의 방법론으로서 자주 활용되었다. 이런 흐름 가운데, 링크레이터는 훈련의 모든 단계에서 이미지를 적극적으로 활용하여 다른 훈련 방법론과 차별화된 자신만의 독자적인 훈련 노선을 개척했다. 곧, 이미지의 활용은 링크레이터 음성 훈련의 핵심이라 할 수 있다. 링크레이터는 음성 훈련을 효율적으로 이끌어 줄 다양한 이미지를 제시하는데, 그중에서도 ‘물의 이미지’는 소리 자체와 소리가 나아가는 양상을 비유하는 데 지속적으로 사용된다. 이는 링크레이터가 지향하는 자유로운 음성을 길러내는 데 ‘물의 이미지’가 매우 효과적임을 시사한다. 그러므로 이러한 ‘물의 이미지’에 관한 접근은 링크레이터 음성 훈련에 대한 심층적 이해를 돕고, 나아가 훈련의 효용성을 높이는 데 기여할 수 있으리라 판단된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)의 물질적 상상력 이론을 토대로 링크레이터 음성 훈련에 나타나는 ‘물의 이미지’의 특징과 기능에 관한 분석을 시도하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 물질적 상상력의 개념과 이미지의 ‘물질성’, 그리고 ‘운동성’에 대해 기술하고, 이를 토대로 링크레이터 음성 훈련에 활용되는 ‘물의 이미지’를 ‘고인 물’, ‘흘러가는 물’, ‘복합적인 물’로 분류하여 이들 각각의 이미지들이 어떤 특징을 가지며 훈련에서 어떻게 기능하는지를 분석하였다. 그 결과 우선 각 유형의 ‘물의 이미지’가 유연함과 부드러움, 반영성과 유동성, 상승/하강성 등의 특징을 가지며, 이러한 특징을 적용한 링크레이터의 음성 훈련은 몸의 이완과 경제적이고 건강한 음성 운용의 기술을 보다 효율적으로 체득할 수 있게 해 준다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서 시도한 이미지에 대한 고찰은 향후 연기자를 위한 음성 훈련에서 이미지를 접목한 새로운 방법론 개발의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
