It is by no means easy to propose a new theory and methodology for biblical preaching, because it’s philosophy and methodologies are familiar to many preachers and thus have been consistently pursued and practiced. Recently, Abraham Kuruvilla’s new preaching theory and methodology on biblical preaching are receiving attention in North American evangelical preaching academia. Basically, Kuruvilla shares the traditional philosophy of expository preaching that, on the basis of the inspiration and infallibility of the Bible, there should be a faithful explanation and application of the text to the audience. However, he suggests a different theory and practice method from the existing traditional expository preaching method. For Korean church preachers who respect the Bible text as the Word of God and prefer expository preaching, Kuruvilla’s new preaching method can be botth traditional and challenging, and thus is worthy of attention. This study aims to evaluate the core content and method by examining the preaching theory and methodology of Abraham Kuruvilla. To this end, this study first provides a brief history of him, and the background of the preaching theory and methodology he advocates. This study examines the key terms for his preaching methodology in turn, such as Pericopal theology, the World in front of the Text, and Christoiconic preaching, which are somewhat different from expository preaching. Finally, this study presents the contributions and weaknesses of his preaching methodology.

성경적 설교에 대한 새로운 이론과 방법론을 제시하는 것은 결코 쉬 운 일이 아니다. 많은 설교자에게 익숙한 설교 철학이자 그동안 꾸준히 추구하며 수행해왔던 설교 방법이기 때문이다. 최근 성경적 설교에 관 한 Abraham Kuruvilla의 새로운 설교 이론과 방법론이 북미 복음주의 설교학계에서 주목을 받고 있다. 그는 기본적으로 성경의 영감성과 무 오성의 기초 위에, 본문에 충실하고도 청중에게 적실한 적용이 있어야 한다는 전통적인 강해 설교의 철학을 공유하고 있으면서도, 기존의 전 통적 강해 설교의 방법론과는 다른 이론과 실천 방법을 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 하나님의 말씀으로서의 성경 본문을 존중하여 강해적 설교 를 선호하는 한국교회 설교자들과 목회자들에게 그의 새로운 이론과 방법론은 이처럼 전통적이면서도 도전적이기에 관심을 가지고 주목해 볼 만한 충분한 가치가 있다. 이 논문은 최근 주목받는 설교학자인 Abraham Kuruvilla의 성경적 설교에 관한 이론과 방법론을 살펴보면서 그 핵심 내용과 방법을 평가 하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 먼저 그에 대한 간단한 이력을 제공 하고, 그가 주장하는 설교 이론과 방법론이 나오게 된 배경과 더불어 기존 강해 설교와는 다소 차이를 보이는 이론과 실천의 특징들을 그가 강조하는 핵심 용어들인 문단 신학(pericopal theology), 본문 앞의 세계 (the World in front of the Text), 그리스도 형상적 설교(Christoiconic preaching) 등을 중심으로 차례로 살펴보고자 한다. 끝으로 그의 설교 방법론이 현대 성경적 설교의 이해와 실천에 가져다주는 공헌들과 약 점들을 평가 제시해 보고자 한다.
