In this study, 9 songs of traditional Jeju folk songs by Joo-Ok Kim, who is evaluated to be the professional who systematized traditional Jeju folk songs, were covered to discover the root musical styles of traditional Jeju folk songs by going through their contents, scale, pitches, melodies, rhythms, and tempo. In particular, the study revealed the function and vocal condition of traditional Jeju folk songs by providing the Jeju language notation along with the musical elements and interpretations in standard language. This study also examined the structures of the Jeju folk songs’ by their composition, vocal type, the presence of a chorus, question- and-answer style, and the passage. By examining the rhythm and tempo, it was discovered that , , , and are irregular rhythms, and the rest of the songs have certain regularity with a certain tempo. The tempo varies from ♩.=36 to of ♩.=110. Notably, there are various musical scales across pentatonic G, Bb, F, Db and so on. Joo-ok Kim's Jeju folk songs are sung in a wide range of pitches, and generally starts with the highest note of the song and ends with the lowest note, often with changing scales.

본고는 제주민요의 주된 음악양식을 가늠하기 위하여 제주민요를 체계화하고 활성화했다는 평가를 받고 있는 김주옥의 제주토속민요 9곡을 채보하여 사설과 내용, 음계와 음역, 선율의 특징, 장단과 템포 등을 알아보았다. 특히 제주토속민요의 음악적 요소와 함께 제주어 표기 법에 맞게 사설을 표기하고 표준어로 해석하여 제주토속민요의 기능과 가창상황을 규명하 였다. 본 연구로 악곡 구조를 살펴 가창 형식, 후렴 유무, 문답형 유무, 유절형식을 규명하였 다. 장단과 템포를 살펴 <밧 리는 소리>, <촐 비는 소리>, <레 는 소리>, <웡이자랑> 은 불규칙 장단이며, 나머지 노래는 규칙성이 있으며, 일정한 박자를 가지고 있음을 알았다. 템포는 <레 는 소리>♩.=36부터 <검질매는 소리> ♩.=110 까지 다양하다. 음계는 G본 청 레음계, Bb본청 솔음계, F본청 도음계, Bb본청 도음계, Bb 본청 레음계, Db본청 도음계, Bb 본청 레음계 등 다양하다. 김주옥 제주토속민요는 넓은 음역에서 소리하며, 대체로 곡의 최고음으로 시작하여 하행하다가 최저음으로 종지하는 특징이 있다. 그리고 한 곡 안에서도 음계가 변하는 경우도 있다.
