This paper assesses the significance of Gwon Geun in the history of thoughts on Confucian classics by analyzing the reorganization of the “Yueji” chapter and interpretation on this chapter, demonstrated in his Yegi cheongyeonnok. Gwon Geun reorganizes “Yueji” by separating this chapter into two parts of classic and commentaries and rearranging one of its sections. This separation seems modelled after Zhu Xi’s Daxue zhangju; however, it still can be regarded as a unique approach in that he distinguishes the two parts based on his own criteria: the importance of contents and reliability assessed by evidential research. As for rearrangement, it is a repetition of what has already been done; even without considering the previous work, it is still difficult to attach significance as Gwon Geun has only moved one section that has clear dissimilarity in form. Gwon’s reading pays attention to the flow; his aim is making the flow conspicuous through his interpretation rather than newly establishing the flow by actively rearranging the original order of “Yueji”. An outstanding view of Gwon’s interpretation is to emphasize moral self- cultivation. That is, based on the concept of the unity of heaven and humans, he argues that, in order to establish music properly, desire of the heart should be restricted by ritual which originates from human nature equivalent to heavenly principle. He also argues that, by adopting properly established music as a means of self-cultivation, one needs to make an effort to ensure the right outcomes of the response of the heart. Despite acknowledging the unity of heaven and humans, Gwon stresses human capacity differentiated from the operation of the natural world; the natural world circulates on opposite ends, whereas humans are able to produce positive results only through their subjective competence. While “Yueji” emphasizes music’s role to achieve harmony that works complementary to ritual, Gwon mainly sees music as a means of cultivation from the viewpoint of Neo-Confucianism. As a result, Gwon reinterprets “Yueji” shifting its main focus from music to a person who performs cultivation by means of music. The significance of Gwon’s interpretation will be assessed more properly by examining its reception in the history of thought in Joseon.

이 글은 권근이 『예기천견록』에서 ｢악기｣편의 체제를 재편한 것과 ｢악기｣를 독해한 관점을 중심으로 권근의 경학사상사적 의의를 살핀다. 권근은 ｢악기｣를 경과 전으로 분리해 상하편으로 나누고 일부를 재배치한다. ｢악기｣를 경과 전으로 나눈 것은 주희의 『대학장구』를 계승한 측면이 있으나 내용상 중요도와 신뢰성을 기준으로 삼고 고증적 방법을 취했다는 점에서 독창적 구분으로 평가할 수 있다. 하지만 재배치는 이전 시대 이미 행해진 작업의 반복이고, 이전 작업을 고려하지 않더라도 형식상 이질적인 부분을 옮긴 데 그쳐서 의의를 부여하기 어렵다. 권근은 ｢악기｣를 독해하며 조리를 중시했는데, 전면적으로 재배치를 시도하면서 새롭게 조리를 세우는 것이 아니라, ｢악기｣의 서술 순서를 거의 유지하는 가운데 자신의 해석을 통해 조리를 드러낸다. 권근의 해석에서 두드러지는 관점은 수양을 중시하는 것이다. 즉, 천인합일적 사유를 바탕에 두고 천리의 성으로부터 유래한 예를 통해 심의 욕망을 절제해 악을 제대로 제정해야 한다고 주장하고, 이렇게 제정된 악을 수양의 방편으로 삼아 심의 감응이 언제나 올바르게 귀결되도록 해야 한다고 주장한다. 이는 천인합일을 말하면서도 상반된 상태를 순환하는 자연계의 작동과는 달리 항상 좋은 결과에 이르게 하는 인간의 주체적 역량을 주목한 것이다. ｢악기｣의 본래 맥락에서는 예와 상보적으로 작동하며 조화를 이루게 하는 악의 작용이 중요하지만, 권근은 성리학적 관점에서 악을 수양의 방편으로 보면서 악보다는 수양 주체로 주안점을 옮기며 ｢악기｣를 재해석해낸다. 권근의 해석이 갖는 의의는 이후 조선경학사상사에서 이를 수용하는 양상을 살핌으로써 더 명확히 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
