The meeting between President Sun-Myung Moon and President Il-Sung Kim, held 30 years ago, had historical value and meaning in that the world-class anti-communist-winning leader and the leading communist North Korean supreme power discussed improvement of inter-Korean relations and peaceful reunification, with functionalist integration in mind. Consensus achievements and practical efforts of the ‘Sun-Myung Moon and Il-sung Kim Conference’ are aimed at strengthening mutual exchange and cooperation in non-political fields such as economy, society, and culture between the two Koreas, and to seek economic and political integration through this theoretical basis. It puts on functionalism. Through the process of functional integration and mutual restructuring in each field, as the basis for extensive inter-Korean economic exchange and cooperation and social and cultural exchanges, it aims to reach the stage of formation of peaceful unification between the two Koreas by preventing war and resolving political conflicts, confrontations, and feelings of disparity. In particular, this meeting is of great significance in that it has achieved consensus results that focus on expanding contacts in various fields such as humanitarian, economic, social and cultural fields, and peaceful reunification.

지금으로부터 30년 전 개최되었던 문선명 총재와 김일성 주석의 회담은 일찍이 기능주의적 통합을 염두에 두고 세계적인 반공-승공 지도자와 대표적 공산주의자인 북한 최고권력자가 남 북관계 개선과 평화통일을 논의했다는 점에서 역사적 가치와 의미를 가진다. ‘문선명-김일성 회담’의 합의 성과와 실천 노력들은 남북 간에 경제, 사회, 문화 등 비정치적 제 분야에서의 상 호 교류와 협력을 강화하고, 이를 통해 경제적· 정치적 통합을 모색하기 위한 것으로 그 이론적 바탕을 기능주의에 두고 있다. 다차원적인 남북 간 경제교류협력과 사회· 문화교류가 근간이 되어 분야별 기능적 통합과 상호 구조조정 과정을 거치면서 전쟁을 방지, 정치적 갈등과 대립, 이질감 해소 등을 통해 한반도 평화통일의 형성 단계에 접근하고자 했기 때문이다. 특히 본 회 담은 인도적 분야, 경제 분야, 사회· 문화 분야, 평화통일 분야 등 다방면적인 접촉 확대에 주안 점을 둔 합의를 도출했다는 점에 큰 의의가 있다.
