This paper aims to explore the determinants affecting the ownership decision of Korean foreign direct investment (FDI)’s in the Asia regions from 2009 to 2018. By drawing on the transaction cost theory, eclectic theory and institutional theory, 2,126 overseas subsidiaries of 539 Korean manufacturing firms operating in 11 Asian regions were empirically examined to verify the factors affecting the entry mode decision in the Asian regions. As our results shown, R&D intensity and international experience are positively associated with wholly-owned ownership, implying that the firms accumulating R&D capability and international business experience prefer wholly-owned ownership. Further, our findings also showed that the potential market growth of the local market is positively associated with wholly-owned ownership. We investigated and empirically showed the factors affecting FDI’s ownership decision based on the transaction cost theory as well as eclectic theory and institutional theory. In particular, our results suggested that three perspectives, transaction cost theory, eclectic theory and institutional theory, positively influence the ownership decision of Korean FDIs, and this is our academic contribution. In addition, our paper has practical implications. Since this study examined the recent ten-year secondary data in Asian countries including China, Japan, India, and ASEAN regions, thus, our results provide the extensive pattern of Korean FDI’s entry mode choice in Asian markets.

본 연구는 2009년부터 2018년까지 아시아 지역으로 진출한 한국 기업의 해외직접투자 시 기업의 진입방식에 영향을 미치는 요인 을 규명하고자 한다. 거래비용이론, 제도이론, 절충이론을 바탕으로 11개 지역에 진출해 있는 539개 한국 제조기업의 2,126개 해외 자회사를 대상으로 기업의 해외진입방식에 영향을 미치는 요인을 실증적으로 검증하였다. 검증 결과 기업 특유 우위인 연구개발 능력 을 축적한 기업과 국제경영 경험을 보유한 기업은 단독투자를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 현지국 시장의 성장잠재력이 높을수록 기업은 해외직접투자 시 단독투자를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 거래비용이론 뿐 아니라 제도이론과 절충이론을 바탕으로 아시아 시장에서 한국기업의 해외직접투자 진입방식에 미치는 요인을 규명했다는 점에서 학문적 공헌점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 특히 본 연구의 결과는 지금까지 주로 연구되어 왔던 거래비용이론의 요인인 기업의 지식이나 국제 사업 경험 외에도 입지적 요인인 현 지국의 성장 잠재력과 같은 요인 역시 해외직접투자 시 기업의 진입방식에 영향을 미친다는 점을 제시한다는 점에서 본 연구의 학문 적 차별점과 공헌점을 찾을 수 있다. 또한 본 연구가 제시하고 있는 검증 결과는 한국기업이 중국 뿐 아니라 일본, 인도, 아세안 등 아시아 11개 지역에 최근 10년 간 해외직접투자 시 어떠한 요인을 고려해 자회사의 진입방식을 결정했는지를 보여준다는 점에서 실무적 의미도 있다.
