A caption is a short type of commentary attached to an illustration or photograph of a publication, recording the most basic history of the work. Therefore, captions must be accurate, specific, and clear. This is especially true for state institutions with credibility, such as the National Museum of Art, as they are presented as a national standard and are used not only in textbooks but also in various applications. In an era where international exchanges are frequent and information is exchanged through various channels, such as the current print media, the importance of captions cannot be overstated. Nevertheless, captions related to Korean paintings in major art museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, are not only inadequate but are also cause confusion. In particular, if we recall the status and meaning of Korean paintings as a deficit in the realm of Korean traditional art, this is a problem that must be corrected as soon as possible. In a reality where international exchanges are becoming commonplace, it is urgent to translate the captions into English correctly. To this end, a re-examination of the correct establishment of the terms of Korean paintings should be done, and this task should be promoted in order to secure an engine to promote the new development of Korean art accordingly. This study provides basic research by which to analyze the problems associated with Korean painting captions at major national and public art museums, centering on the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and seek alternatives to these.

캡션(caption)은 출판물의 삽화나 사진 등에 붙는 짧은 해설문으로 그 작품의 가장 기본이 되는 이력을 기록하는 것이다. 그 러므로 캡션은 정확하고 구체적이며 분명해야 한다. 특히 그것이 국공립미술관과 같이 공신력 있는 국가 기관일 경우 더욱 그러하다. 이는 국가적인 표준으로 제시되어 교과서는 물론 각종 용처에 사용되기 때문이다. 오늘날과 같이 국제교류가 빈번 하고 인쇄 매체 등 다양한 경로를 통한 정보의 교환이 넘쳐나는 시대에 캡션의 중요성은 두말할 것 없이 중요한 것이다. 그럼 에도 불구하고 한국화에 대한 국립현대미술관을 비롯한 주요 미술관의 한국화 관련 캡션은 미진할 뿐 아니라 난맥과 혼란을 보이고 있다. 특히 한국화가 우리 전통미술의 적자로서 가지고 있는 위상과 의미를 상기한다면 이는 하루빨리 시정되어야 할 문제이다. 국제교류가 일상화된 현실에서 올바른 캡션의 올바른 영문 번역은 시급한 일이다. 이를 위해서 한국화의 용어에 대 한 올바른 정립을 위한 재점검과 재검토가 선행되어야 하며, 이를 통해 한국미술의 새로운 발전을 도모할 수 있는 동력을 확 보하기 위해서도 이러한 작업은 추진되어야 할 것이다. 본 연구는 국립현대미술관과 서울 시립미술관을 중심으로 주요 국공 립미술관의 한국화 캡션에 나타난 문제점을 분석하고, 그 대안을 모색하기 위한 기본적인 연구이다.
