The starting point of modern education missions begins with William Carey. Carey chose elementary school and Serampore College as an educational instrument of evangelization in India. The elementary school succeeded in enrolling 10,000 students in a total of 126 native schools by 1818. This was to provide equal education opportunities by providing free education to poor children who were not educated through caste system. Serampore College was established for two purposes. First, for Christians, college education was used as a means of mission to India, so that the workers produced there could be used as elementary school teachers and church workers. Second, it was intended to teach non-Christians a variety of worldly studies, such as science, ethics, botany, geography, etc., in addition to theology, so that young people who received holistic education could lead social reform and economic innovation in the future. Carey had to fulfill several things in order to be successful in education missions in India. Finding out what Carey did well and made mistakes among the five below will help Korean missions to set the right direction. First, it concerns the unity and dedication of the Serampore Trio. Second, it is about the adaptation of new missionaries to the Serampore Mission. Third, it is about the relationship between Carey and the government (East India Company). Fourth, it is about the relationship between Carey and the mission headquarters in England. Fifth, it is about Carey’s personality and view of matter. Of these five, Carey did excellently in the first, third, and fifth, while the second and fourth did not. This paper aims to help the Korean church to lead the world mission by analyzing and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of Carey’s educational mission in India.

현대 교육 선교의 시발점은 윌리엄 캐리로부터 시작된다. 캐리는 인도 복음화의 교육 수단으로 초등학교와 세람포어 대학을 선정했다. 초등학교 는 1818년까지 총 126개 현지인 학교에 1만 명의 학생이 등록할 만큼 성 공을 거두었다. 이것은 카스트로 교육받지 못한 가난한 어린이들에게 무상 교육을 제공해서 교육 기회의 균등을 제공하기 위함이었다. 세람포어 대학 은 두 가지 목적으로 설립되었는데 첫째로 기독교인에게는 대학교육을 인 도 선교의 수단으로 삼아서 이곳에서 배출된 일꾼들을 초등학교 교사와 교 회 사역자로 활용하기 위함이었다. 둘째로 비기독교에게는 신학 외에 과 학, 윤리, 식물학, 지리학 등 다양한 세상 학문을 가르쳐서, 총체적 교육을 받은 젊은이들이 훗날 사회개혁과 경제적 혁신을 이끌 수 있도록 하기 위 함이었다. 캐리는 인도 교육 선교에 성공을 거두기 위해서 몇 가지를 충족해야만 했다. 아래의 다섯 가지 중에서 캐리가 잘한 것과 실수한 것을 찾아본다면 한국선교가 올바른 방향을 잡는데 도움이 될 것이다. 첫째로 세람포어 삼총 사의 연합과 헌신에 관한 것이다. 둘째로 신임 선교사의 세람포어 선교회의 적응에 관한 것이다. 셋째로 케리와 정부(동인도회사)와의 관계에 관한 것 이다. 넷째로 캐리와 영국 선교 본부와의 관계에 관한 것이다. 다섯째로 캐 리의 성품과 물질관에 관한 것이다. 이 가운데 캐리는 첫째, 셋째, 다섯째는 탁월하게 잘했지만, 반면에 둘째와 넷째는 그렇지 못했다. 본고는 한국교회 로 하여금 캐리의 인도 교육 선교의 장단점을 분석·평가한 뒤 선교 방향을 바로 잡아 세계선교를 이끌어 갈 수 있도록 도움을 주고자 한다.
