This review is a summary of the process and character of Taiwan Buddhism. Taiwanese Buddhism has not received much attention in Korea, but in recent years there has been a trend of interest in Taiwanese Buddhism. In this background, various studies are being conducted on the history, identity, factors of development, and people of Taiwan Buddhism. Against this background, I intend to examine the contents of the purifying identity of Taiwan Buddhism in this article. I have paid attention to the development factors of Taiwan Buddhism in terms of social welfare. However, this article examines the characteristics of the purification of Taiwanese Buddhism by dividing it into a few. First, the aspect of purification centered on precepts. Second, it has gone through the process of institutionalization. Third, the status of temples and monks has increased due to purification. Fourth, the method of propagation was promoted by purification. It is hoped that such research will be helpful in understanding Taiwan Buddhism. Furthermore, this review can be a perspective that allows a new understanding of the Korean Buddhist purification movement, the Jogye Order, and modern Korean history.

본 고찰은 대만불교의 정화과정 및 성격을 정리한 글이다. 대만불교에 대해서 한 국에서는 큰 주목을 받지 못하였으나, 최근에는 대만불교에 관심을 갖는 흐름이 일 어났다. 이런 배경에서 대만불교의 역사, 정체성, 발전의 요인, 인물 등에 대한 다양 한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 이런 배경에서 필자는 이 글에서 대만불교의 정화 정체성에 대한 내용을 살피려고 한다. 필자는 대만불교의 발전 요인을 사회복지 차원에서 주목한 바가 있었다. 그러 나 이 글에서는 대만불교 정화의 특징을 몇 가지로 나누어 살핀다. 첫째, 계율 중심 의 정화라는 측면이다. 둘째, 제도화 과정을 거쳤다는 것이다. 셋째, 정화로 인해 사 찰과 승려의 위상이 증대된 측면이다. 넷째, 정화로 인해 포교방법이 촉진되었다. 이와 같은 본 연구가 대만불교의 이해에 도움이 되기를 기대한다. 나아가서 이 고 찰은 한국의 불교정화운동, 조계종단, 한국 현대사 등을 새롭게 이해할 수 있는 관점 이 될 수 있을 것이다.
