This review is an academic summary of' JeongHyedoryang'(정혜도량) history and personality a reform organization of nuns that spontaneously appeared and worked during the longitudinal reform in 1994. Although research on longitudinal reform in 1994 has not been intensified, there is no research on all the problems of nuns who actively participated in longitudinal reform. Against this background, in this article, I took note of the following aspects. First, we tried to examine the process of inauguration of JeongHyedoryang based on objective grounds. Second, I tried to examine the activities and characteristics of Jeong Hye Do-ryang in detail, relying on literature and testimony. Jeong Hye-doryang was established to serve as a single channel for the reform of the end of the bhikkhuni prior to the inauguration of the end of the clan. Third, Hye Doyang Jeong tried to examine the causes and limitations of his own resignation in the middle of 1994 when the longitudinal reform was underway. Jeong Hye-do-ryang conveyed the will of the Bikkhuni to reform the religious sect, but voluntarily disbanded just before the establishment of the clan. Fourth, I tried to examine the influence and a sense of successionof JeongHyedoryang. Jeong Hye-doryang became a history of Bikkhuni reform, but his will to succeed was weak. I hope that this article will serve as a catalyst for research on the ending reform in 1994, the history of modern Korean monks, and the history of the Buddhist monks of the Jogye Order. Studies on the history, culture, and character of nuns are poor. A few years ago, a study on the practice and life of the eldest monk of the monk of the monk was started by the National Bhikkhuni Association of the Jogye Order and the Bhikkuni Research Institute, but no follow-up studies have been made. Recently, the Korean Bhikkhuni Sangha Institute was opened under the National Bhikkhuni Association, and this will lead to vitalization of Bhikkuni research. I hope this article will join the new flow of research on Bhikkuni.

본 고찰은 1994년 종단개혁 당시에 자생적으로 등장하여 활동한 비구니의 개혁 단 체인 ‘정혜도량’의 역사와 성격을 학술적으로 정리한 글이다. 94년 종단개혁에 대한 연구는 심화되지 않았지만, 종단개혁에 적극적으로 참여한 비구니의 제반 문제에 대해서는 연구가 부재한 상황이다. 이런 배경하에서 이 글에서 필자는 다음과 같은 측면을 유의하였다. 첫째, 정혜도 량의 출범 과정을 객관적인 근거에 의하여 살피고자 하였다. 둘째, 정혜도량의 활동 과 성격을 문헌 및 증언에 의지하여 구체적으로 살피고자 하였다. 정혜도량은 종단 출범 이전에 비구니들의 종단개혁의 단일창구로서 역할을 하기 위해 출범하였다. 셋 째, 정혜도량이 종단개혁이 진행되던 94년 중반기에 스스로 퇴진한 원인과 한계를 살피고자 하였다. 정혜도량은 비구니들의 개혁의지를 전달하였으나, 종단 출범 직전 에 자진 해산하였다. 넷째, 정혜도량의 영향 및 계승의식을 살피고자 하였다. 정혜도 량은 비구니들의 개혁정신에 역사는 되었으나, 계승의 의지는 박약하였다. 이 글이 94년 종단개혁, 한국 현대 비구니사, 조계종단의 비구니사 등의 연구에 촉 매제가 되기를 기대한다. 비구니의 역사, 문화, 성격 등에 대한 연구는 저조한 상황 이다. 수년 전, 조계종단 전국비구니회와 비구니연구소에 의해서 비구니 문중의 큰스 님의 수행과 삶에 대한 연구가 시작되었으나 그 후속 연구는 나오지 않고 있다. 최근 전국비구니회의 산하에 한국 비구니승가연구소가 개설되었거니와 이를 계기로 비 구니 연구가 활성화 될 것이다. 이글이 비구니에 대한 새로운 연구의 흐름에 촉매 제가 되기를 바란다.
