75 years have passed since National Liberation Day of Korea. While Korea is not considered a defeated country, it has been divided into South and North for 73 years without achieving complete sovereignty on the Korean Peninsula. How can we learn from such a history, overcome division, and realize a national community of peace and prosperity? It appears there is no foreign power capable of overcoming the division of the Korean peninsula as well. The United States, China, and Japan are in conflict in East Asia. The temperature on the Korean peninsula surrounding North Korea's nuclear weapons is also rising. The complexity of unification must be addressed by Korea itself through high-level policies utilizing nationalism and internationalism. The persistent political power armed with nationalism and the will of the citizens to support unification are important. Even in the course of sudden changes in the Korean peninsula, a willingness for unification that will capture the hearts of North Koreans and a consistent driving force to promote unification based on the national horizon are necessary. This paper seeks to examine how unification for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula can be found and what its driving forces may be by examining dimensions of historical continuity and ideological homogeneity between the two Koreas.

광복 75년이 지났다. 패전국도 아니면서 주권국가로서 한반도에서 주권적 실체를 이루지 못한 채, 분단 73년을 맞는다. 이 같은 역사에서 어떻게 교훈을 얻어, 분단을 극복하고 평화와 번영의 민족공동체를 실현할 것인가? 한반도 분단 상황을 대신 극복해줄 외세는 없는 것 아닌가? 동아시아 남·동중국해에서 미국과 중국, 일본이 갈등하며, 북핵을 둘러싼 한반도 온도도 올라가고 있다. 한반도와 남·북한 통일이 가진 복잡성을 민족주의와 국제주의를 활용한 고도의 정책을 통해 스스로 추진해 야 하는 것이다. 민족주의로 무장한 끈질긴 정치력과 이를 뒷받침해 줄 시민들의 통일의지가 중요한 것이다. 한반도 급변사태 과정에서도 북한주민의 마음을 사로잡을 통일의지, 그 민족적 지평 위에서 통일을 추진할 일관성 있는 추동력이 필요한 것이다. 어떻게 한반도 평화와 번영을 위한 통일, 그 추동력을 찾을 것인가? 답 하기 위해 남·북한의 역사적 연속성과 이념적 동질성의 차원에서 모색해보겠다.
