Auxiliary verbs in modern Chinese are also called capable-volitive verbs, most of which are thought to express modal meanings, i.e. modality. These meanings can be divided into two categories: broad sense and narrow sense. The broad sense of modality includes the meanings of possibility, necessity and reality, and the narrow sense only includes possibility and necessity. The current view of linguists on modality tends to narrow one, but non-modal meanings such as permission and volition have been added, and the modality is further divided into alethic modality, epistemic modality, deontic modality and dynamic modality, etc. In fact, these extended meanings are the mixed products of modal meanings and non-modal intensional meanings owned by auxiliary verbs. In modern Chinese, there are a few auxiliary verbs can just express modal meanings. Some auxiliary verbs do not express modal meanings but only express non-modal intensional meanings. Another part of modern Chinese auxiliary verbs not only express the meanings of possibility or necessity, but also the meanings of non-modal intension simultaneously. From this perspective, Chinese auxiliary verbs are not equivalent to modal words. This article's investigation of auxiliary verbs in modern Chinese shows that some so-called items of meaning of auxiliary verbs are actually not word meanings, but pragmatic implicatures. Some modal meanings seem to be expressed by auxiliary verbs themselves, but they are restricted by specific context and other situational factors, difficult to be expressed by auxiliary verbs alone. Otherwise, some auxiliary verbs own different performative force when they express modal meanings. These phenomena show that the meanings expressed by auxiliary verbs in modern Chinese are more complicated and should be further divided into several different kinds. Moreover, the meanings discussed above are often merged or implicated each other, and even entangled with pragmatic implicatures, all of which is worthy of our re-understanding.
