The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the awareness of military service of school-aged immigrant youth, identify the support needed for military service before and after the service, and to seek guidance for military social welfare practices. For the study, we conducted in-depth interviews across 16 immigrant youth of age 17 and above that have lived in Korea for more than a year, residing in the northern Gyeonggi province. As a result, a total of 71 sub themes, 10 subcategories, and three categories were derived regarding the perception of the Republic of Korea, the Korean military, and the military service. The key findings are as follows: First, the perception of the Republic of Korea appeared as a country that is safe but sad and ambiguous, and regretful, sorrowful and pitiful as well as the last legacy of a dark and lonely Cold War trapped behind steel bars. Second, the perception of the Korea military appeared to be necessary and important, an awesome and admirable but a place where you need to carry out tough and difficult tasks. Third, they expressed military service as being trapped and vague, expecting everything to be difficult, and asked what kind of support they will be receiving. Based on these results, we presented practical implications and policy suggestions.

본 연구는 중도입국청소년의 군 복무에 대한 인식을 심층적으로 살펴보고 중도입국청소년의 군생활을 지원하기 위한 입대 전·후의 필요한 지원을 파악하고 군 사회복지 실천 방향을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경기북부지역에 거주하는 17세 이상의 중도입국 1년 이상인 자 16명을 대상으로 개별 심층면접 을 하였으며, 대한민국에 대한 이미지, 대한민국 군에 대한 인식, 군 복무에 대한 인식에 대해 71개의 의미 단위와 10개의 하위범주, 3개의 범주가 도출되었다. 주요 연구결과는 첫째, 대한민국에 대한 이미지는 잘 살고 안전하지만 슬프고 좀 애매한 나라, 안타깝고 아쉬우며 불쌍한 나라, 철창 속에 갇혀 있는 어둡고 외 로운 냉전시대 마지막 유산으로 나타났다. 둘째, 대한민국 군에 대한 인식은 필요하고 중요한 일, 멋있고 훌륭하지만 힘들고 어려운 일을 하는 곳, 실없는 소리로, 셋째, 군 복무에 대한 인식은 옥죄임과 막연함, 모 든 게 힘들 것임, 무얼 도와요, 잘 알려주세요로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 실천적 함의와 정책 적 제언을 제시하였다.
