This paper, as an effort to diverge from semiotic-based comic studies, attempts to discuss multimodality and affective discourse in comics through a cognitive approach. The reason to break away from the semiotic evaluation of comics is that there is a growing demand for a new truth discourse system in the climate of the Post-Truth media ecosystem, where confidence in truth discourse composed of objective facts has been seriously challenged. Coincidently, the interest and popularity of non-fiction comic formats have been increasing in the media. Traditionally, comics are considered to be ill-suited for non-fiction because it doesn’t provide factual objectivity of worldly events. Instead, comics, utilize alternative social discourse, in that it coordinates diverse socio-cultural meanings and allows multiple interpretations derived from the intersubjective collocation of creators and readers. More studies on the discourse system of non-fiction comics are warranted. This paper suggests linguistic and multimodal theories from a cognitive perspective to replace logos-centric semantics and analytical discourse which has given rise to the current crisis. Accordingly, metaphorical interpretation of non-fiction comics through multimodality is not insufficient to construct cognitively shared real world amongst participants of meaning making.

본 연구는 기호학 중심의 만화 연구에서 벗어나 인지주의적 접근을 통 해 만화 양식의 다중양상(multimodality)와 사회적 담론을 전개하는 과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 기호학 중심에서 탈피하고자 하는 의미는 이에 대한 무 용론을 제기하기 위함이 아니라 객관적 사실로 구성한 진실 담론에 대한 본질적인 신뢰가 사라진 현재의 포스트-트루스(Post-Truth) 미디어 생태 계에서는 새로운 진리 담론 체계에 대한 요구가 늘어나고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 가운데 최신의 미디어 플랫폼에서는 사건의 사실 관계와 실제성의 획득이 전제되는 논-픽션 장르로서 만화 포맷이 활용되는 사례가 늘고 있 다. 만화 텍스트는 전통적인 논-픽션의 객관적 진실 담론 모드와 차별화 된 사회문화적 의미를 조율하고 창작자와 독자의 간주관적 관점에서 파생 되는 복수의 해석을 허용한다는 점에서 위기에 직면한 진실 담론의 대안 적인 사회적 담론을 제시하는 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 따라서 논-픽션 만 화의 담론 체계에 대한 본격적인 연구가 필요하다. 우선, 객관성을 중시 하는 로고스 중심의 의미론과 분석적 담론으로부터 기인한 문제를 인지주 의적 관점의 언어학과 다중양상 이론으로 대체하고자 한다. 이를 통해 논 -픽션 만화의 다중양상을 통한 은유적 해석이 리얼리티를 실제적으로 구 성하는데 부족하지 않으며, 개인의 실제 경험과 기억, 공동된 문화적 인 식의 구체성을 기반으로 다양하고 감응적인 해석이 허용되는 사회적 진실 담론 모드로서의 논-픽션 만화를 살펴보고자 한다.
