This article dicusses cultural adaptation of Disney’s series and its role. Disney adapted the British folk tale Three Little Pigs into four short animation film series between 1933 and 1939 during the Great Depression. Under the gloomy national circumstance, the pigs’ togetherness, collectively defeating encourage the nation to overcome adversity of the time. Animation could be a relatively marginal presence of Hollywood film industry at the time, but the series were at the very heart of both the film industry and popular culture in America. Interests in Disney animation have mainly been focused on feature-length films. This article tries to understand American dominant cultural values and influence of the popular culture through analysing disneyfied adaptation of the folk tale. For this, Gannon’s cultural metaphor and Hofstede’s cultural values are mainly applied. The eldest Practical pig, as the central character in the series, builds the strong brick house. This implies wisdom and family protecting duty of commoners. Defeating against the evil wolf particularly carries core messages what Americans value: individualism, low uncertainty avoidance, and preference of brand-new science technology in the series. Disney’s adaptation became a new story in which the commoners fight against and overcome hardship better associated with the nation. The study on Disney adaptation can be useful for learning English language which needs to combine cultural studies and developing multicultural competence, which can be learned through mutual understanding and appreciate our own and others’ perspectives.

본 연구는 디즈니 <아기 돼지 삼형제>시리즈의 문화적 각색과 역할에 대해 논의 한 다. 디즈니사는 영국의 전래동화 『아기 돼지 삼형제』를 각색하여 대공황기인 1933년 -1939년 사이에 4편의 단편 애니메이션 시리즈를 제작한다. 당시의 암울한 국가적 상 황에 비추어, 돼지 삼형제의 화합과 집단적 대항은 미국의 대중이 역경을 극복하도록 격려한다. 당시 애니메이션 장르는 할리우드 영화계에서 비교적 주변부에 위치하였으 나, 디즈니의 <아기 돼지 삼형제> 시리즈는 미국 영화 산업과 대중문화의 핵심부에 존재하게 된다. 디즈니 애니메이션에 대한 연구는 장편에 치중되어 있다. 본 연구는 전래동화의 디즈니 각색 돼지 삼형제 시리즈의 분석을 통해 미국 주류문 화의 가치와 대중문화의 영향력을 파악하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 개논의 문화 메타포와 호프스테드의 문화적 가치의 관점을 적용한다. ‘실용적인 돼지’는, 시리즈의 핵심 캐릭 터로서, 튼튼한 벽돌집을 짓는다. 벽돌집은 보통사람의 지혜, 용기와 가족을 지키기 위 한 의무감을 뜻한다. 늑대라는 재난을 극복하는 과정은 특히 미국인들이 중시하는 가 치인 개인주의, 불확실성에 맞서는 강한 성향 및 첨단 과학기술의 높은 선호도 등을 전 달한다. 애니메이션 시리즈는 문화적 각색을 통해 보통사람들이 역경을 극복하고 더 나은 국가 건설을 위해 투쟁하는 새로운 이야기가 된다. 디즈니 각색 애니메이션에 대한 본 연구의 결과는 영어 학습에 필수적으로 병행해야 하는 문화학습의 자료로, 자신과 타인의 관점을 이해하고 존중하는 다문화적 역량의 함양에 유용하게 쓰일 수 있을 것이다.
