The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of international students’ social and emotional competence on college adaptation, and to find out whether the social support mediates the relationship between social and emotional competence and college adaptation. To verify this, an online survey was conducted on international students attending universities in Korea, and a total of 397 data were used for analysis. First, social and emotional competence, college adaptation, and social support by supporters all showed significant positive correlations. Second, it was found that the social and emotional competence of international students had a positive effect on college life adaptation. Third, it was confirmed that the social support of Korean friends, co-national friends, and international friends all had partial mediating effects in the relationship between social and emotional competence and college life adaptation. Based on the results of this study, it is intended to contribute to helping international students adapt in the higher education in Korea by developing a social and emotional learning to cultivate the social and emotional competence of international students and by proposing measures to improve the level of social support.

본 연구는 국내 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생의 사회정서역량이 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향에서 지지원별(한국 친구, 모국 친구, 타국 친구)의 사회적지지가 매개효과 를 가지는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 국내 대학(원)에 재학하고 있는 유학생을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 397명의 데이터를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 사회정서역량과 대학생활적응, 지지원별 사회적지지는 모두 유의한 정적 상관관계로 나타났다. 둘째, 유학생의 사회정서역량은 대학생활적응에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치 는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 사회정서역량과 대학생활적응 간의 관계에서 한국 친구, 모 국 친구, 타국 친구의 사회적지지는 모두 부분매개효과를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 유학생의 사회정서역량을 함양하기 위한 사회정서학습 프로 그램 개발과 지지원별 사회적지지 수준 향상을 위한 방안을 제안함으로써 국내 고등교 육 현장에서 외국인 유학생의 적응을 돕는 데 기여하고자 한다.
