This study aims at identifying how immigrant women in the movie “Punch” were represented in terms of ‘controlling images’ and ‘intersectionality’ as an analysis frame. As one of the results, the controlling images of immigrant women could be classified into four categories: ‘a sold bride(prostitute)’, ‘a poor wife’, ‘a housekeeper’, and ‘a tool for completion of a family’. In the analysis of intersectionality, the immigrant woman was represented by intersectional oppressions as follows: (1) a wife who has been sold but still poor, (2) someone’s mother, someone’s wife, and (3) a tool for the completion of a family without their own right to make choices. This study suggests the following points. Methods for representation of the immigrant woman in “Punch” show that immigrant women remain unequal and oppressed in Korean society. Movies are media that make the situation and social structure natural. Thus, practices of critical reading on movies should be performed by teachers and students in order to make proper meanings in movies and see worlds authentically. Furthermore, based on critical perception of the ambilaterality of movies that contain both the dominant ideology and the voice of resistance, attempts should be made to analyze minority groups in various movies from the perspective of intersectionality and apply those results in actual social studies classes.

이 연구에서는 비판적 영화 읽기의 실천 차원에서 ‘통제적 이미지(controlling images)’와 ‘교차성(intersectionality)’을 분석틀로 삼아 영화 “완득이” 속 이주여성을 분석하였다. 먼저, 다양한 매체 속 이주여성에게 부여되는 통제적 이미지를 분석하였는데, ‘팔려 온 신부(매춘부)’, ‘가난한 아내’, ‘가사노동 수행자’, ‘가족 완성을 위한 도구’의 네 가지 범주로 나타났다. 이어서 통제적 이미지 범주와 교차적 억압의 사례를 바탕으로 교차성 분석이 이루어졌다. 이주여성이 경험하는 교차적 억압은 이주여성을 ‘팔려 왔으나 여전히 가난한 아내’, ‘누군가의 엄마, 누군가의 아내’, ‘자신의 선택권이 없는 가족 완성을 위한 도구’로 재현하였다. 이 연구는 다음과 같은 점을 시사한다. “완득이”의 이주여성 재현 방식은 한국 사회에서 이주여성이 차별과 억압의 대상임을 보여준다. 영화는 이러한 상황 및 사회적 구조를 자연스러운 것으로 만드는 매체이다. 따라서 영화에서 올바른 의미를 만들고 진정으로 세계를 바라보기 위해서는 교사와 학생의 비판적 영화 읽기 실천이 이루어져야 한다. 나아가 지배 이데올로기와 저항의 목소리를 동시에 담고 있다는 영화의 양면성에 대한 문제의식을 바탕으로 다양한 영화 속 소수자 집단을 교차성의 관점으로 살펴보고 그 결과를 실제 사회과 수업에 녹여내기 위한 시도가 이루어져야 한다.
