The purpose of this article is to examine the reality of dementia as a social stereotype, to broaden the understanding of dementia and to explore how the Christian community understand dementia and provide effective care for dementia patients and their families. Dementia is a disease that is linked to cognitive and behavioral damage caused by brain diseases, and when it progresses badly, people may live entirely depend on others. Therefore, dementia patients have difficulty functioning as human beings and are anxious not to know how their disease progress. Also, they experience shame and live more in isolation due to the negative stereotypes that modern society has about dementia. Therefore, this study examined the development of dementia causes and symptoms from various perspectives and explored the reality of dementia through a social constructive approach to dementia from the perspective of dementia patients. This exploration gives important implications for how to understand dementia and effectively care for dementia patients within the Christian community. From a social constructive perspective, the cause of dementia is unclear and symptoms vary. The distinction between normal aging and dementia is also ambiguous. Above all, the memory or lack of power in dementia patients makes them think they are deficient. However, dementia varies depending on each person's experience, environment, and relationship. Above all, relationships have looked at playing an important role in improving symptoms in people with dementia. Therefore, this study suggests that the Christian community looks at dementia patients not as deficient beings but as beings with souls that God loves, remembers, loves, and takes care of them more effectively.

이 글은 치매라는 실재에 대한 고정관념이 사회적으로 구성되었다는 입장에서 치 매의 실재에 대해서 탐구하여 치매에 대한 이해를 넓히고 그러한 이해 속에서 기독교 공동체가 어떻게 치매를 이해하고 치매환자를 돌보아야 하는지를 재고찰함으로 치매 환자와 가족들을 위해서 제공할 수 있는 목회적 돌봄을 살피는 것이 그 목적이다. 치 매라는 질병은 뇌의 질환으로 인한 인지적 행동적 감정적 손상과 연관이 있는 질병으 로 심하게 진행되면 기억력이 손실되고 타인에게 온전히 의존해서 살아가기도 한다. 그래서 치매환자들은 인간으로서의 기능이 어렵고 어떻게 자신들의 병이 진행되는지 에 대해서 알 수 없다는 불안감으로 힘들다. 또한, 현대 사회가 치매에 대해서 가지고 있는 부정적 고정관념으로 인해 수치심을 경험하고 스스로 더 고립되어 살아간다.2)그래서 이 연구는 치매의 원인이나 증상의 발전에 대해 다각도로 살펴보고 치매 환자 들의 입장에서 치매를 바라보는 사회구성학적 접근을 통해 치매에 대한 실재를 탐구 하였다. 이러한 탐구는 기독교 공동체 안에서 어떻게 치매를 이해하고 치매 환자를 효과적으로 돌볼 수 있는지에 대한 중요한 시사점을 주고 있다. 사회 구성학적 입장 에서 치매는 원인도 불분명하며 증상의 호전이나 발전이 다양하다. 정상적 노화와 치 매 구분도 애매하다. 무엇보다, 치매 환자들의 기억력이나 지남력의 결핍은 그들을 결 핍된 존재라고 여기게 만든다. 그러나 치매는 각 개인의 경험과 환경 그리고 관계에 따라 다양하게 나타난다. 무엇보다도, 관계는 치매환자들의 증상을 호전시키는데 중요 한 역할을 감당하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 그래서 이 글은 기독교 공동체는 치매 환자 들을 결핍된 존재가 아닌 하나님이 사랑하시는 영혼을 가진 존재로 바라보고 기억하 고 사랑하며 관계를 맺을 때 그들을 더 효과적으로 돌봄임을 제안하고 있다.
