William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)’s sixth volume Responsibilities has 31 poems and was issued in 1914, in his age of 49. Many Yeats scholars thought Responsibilities as a crucial dividing point in Yeats’s poetic world. It is between the fifth section The Green Helmet and other Poems and the seventh section The Wild Swans at Cool and simultaneously and naturally evolves from The Green Helmet and other Poems into The Wild Swans at Coole in the poetic structure. Especially Yeats focused on the poet’s responsibilities in the past, present and future. John Unterecker classified the poems as five areas, like these, supernatural responsibilities, social responsibilities, personal responsibilities and aesthetic responsibilities. And he also classified the poems according to the responsibilities respectively.

49세의 초로에 접어든 예이츠는 시인으로서의 ‘책임’을 통감하고 1914년 여섯 번째 시집 『책임』을 발행한다. 그는 아일랜드 상원의원으로서 사회적 책임, 일생 동안 사랑했던 모드 곤을 비롯한 주변 인물들에 대한 개인적인 책임, 아름다운 시를 쓰 고자 한 시인으로서의 심미학적 책임을 이 시집에서 시를 통하여 표현하고 있다. 이 시 집을 중심으로 전과 후의 시세계가 완전히 달라져서 예이츠 학자들은 이 시집을 매우 중 요한 전환점으로 평가한다.
