In this writing, I have analysed the Hwajinpo legend from the perspective of disaster and considered the disasters in each chapter and the aspects of the community's responses to them. The characteristics of the narrative structure of Hwajinpo legend, which is distinguished from other pieces of the Jangjamot type, are the stone painting of the daughter-in-law and the painting of the Gochongseonang. That structure embodies the complex disasters in Hwajinpo legend and the community's responses to them. The disasters are the submergence of the Lee Hwa-jin family due to the flood, the mental sufferings of the daughter-in-law who lost her family and her home, the famine and the infectious disease in the village. The fact that the village people served the daughter-in-law, who had died and turned into a stone, means that they tried to overcome the disasters together through the ethical practice by accepting the disasters as their business which could cause great damages to each of them. The possibility of an ethical community, which is needed in the event of a disaster, has been developed smoothly and naturally in the process of oral tradition of the Hwajinpo legend. Hwajinpo community of oral literature has recorded the Hwajinpo legend around Lake Hwajinpo to hand it down until now. That expresses our hope that Hwajinpo could establish itself as a scenic spot with the beauty of the natural scenery as well as the humanistic value of the place for the community's life where people gather their wisdom to overcome their disasters.

본고에서는 화진포 전설을 재난의 관점에서 분석하여 각편에 나타난 재난과 공 동체의 대응 양상을 고찰해 보았다. 장자못 유형의 다른 각편과 대별되는 화진포 전설의 서사 구조의 특징은 며느리 의 석화와 고총서낭화이다. 이는 화진포 전설에 나타난 복합적인 재난, 즉 1차-홍 수로 인한 이화진 일가의 수몰, 2차-가족과 삶의 터전을 잃은 며느리의 심리적 재 난과 마을에 닥친 흉년과 전염병 같은 재난들에 대한 공동체의 대응 양상을 문학적 으로 형상화한 것이다. 며느리가 죽어 돌이 되고 돌이 된 며느리를 마을 사람들이 고총서낭으로 모시는 것은 개개인에게 큰 편차로 피해를 입힐 수 있는 재난을 공동 체의 영역으로 포함시키는 윤리적 실천을 통해 함께 해결해 나가고자 하는 모습을 보여주는 것이다. 구비인 화진포 전설은 전승 과정에서 부드럽고 자연스럽게 재난 시에 필요한 윤리적 공동체의 가능성을 키워 왔다. 화진포 구비 공동체는 현재에도 화진포호 주변에 화진포 전설을 기록하여 전한다. 이를 통해 화진포가 자연경관의 수려함뿐만이 아니라 서로의 지혜를 모아 재난 을 극복하고 살아가는 공동체의 삶의 현장이라는 인문학적 가치가 더해진 명승지 로서 자리매김하길 바라는 마음을 표출하고 있는 것이다.
