This study set out to review critically the past history of researches on and reinterpret the work in a broader structure of frivolous human life and consolation for it. As it is known, the two interpretative options of the work, which are "a song of nomads that lost their living foundation" and "a song of an intellectual that left the secular world due to the government's tyranny or foreign invasion," were parts of the work's mainstream interpretations that had enjoyed considerable authority in the history of its interpretations. However, the formation process of the Goryeo Sokyo genre from the private sector to the royal court implies a strong need to establish a different approach to its reading from the old interpretations along with the fact that the ultimate reader of this song was supposed to be the king. In conclusion, this work seems to be a reduced drawing of universal issues in people and their life that keep moving around for a better life but cannot find peaceful rest at any places.

본 논문에서는 <청산별곡>에 대한 그간의 연구사를 비판적으로 검토한 후 부박 한 인간적 삶과 그에 대한 위무라는, 보다 넓은 구도 하에서 이 작품을 재해석해 보았다. 주지하듯, <청산별곡>에 대한 해석적 선택지 가운데 ‘삶의 터전을 잃어버 린 유랑민의 노래’ 혹은 ‘정권의 횡포나 외세의 침략 등으로 속세를 떠나버린 지식 인의 노래’ 등은 <청산별곡>의 해석사(史)에서 상당한 권위를 누려 온 주류적인 해석 가운데 하나였으나 민간→궁중이라는 고려속요 갈래의 형성 과정과 이 노래 의 최종 향유자가 임금이었다는 사실은 재래의 해석들과는 다른 방식의 독법이 마 련되어야 할 필요를 강하게 시사한다. 결론적으로, 이 작품은 좀 더 나은 삶을 위해 끊임없이 이동하지만 그 어느 곳에서도 평안한 안식을 찾을 수 없는, 사람과 사람 살이의 보편적 문제에 대한 축도(縮圖)인 것으로 보인다.
