Yeondam is an outstanding venerable master who devoted his entire life to academic research and practice. After being a monk as a Beopcheonsa, he was a famous master of that time for his deep insight into various scriptures such as 『Hwaeomgyeong』, 『Nungeomgyeong』, 『Geumgangkyung』. It greatly influenced the Buddhist world in the late Joseon Dynasty, which declined through various activities such as the Hwaeom Conference. Yeondam practiced at various temples such as Borimsa, Daeheungsa, Mihwangsa and Beopcheonsa. While cultivating numerous successors, he wrote numerous scriptures which became an opportunity to establish the theoretical system of Buddhist studies in the late Joseon Dynasty. In particular, the research on Hwaeom was developed and the research on Hwaeom was compiled, the commentary on the scriptures used in temples to this day, especially the commentary on Hwaeomhak, is based on the writings of Yeondam. Despite the decline of Buddhism due to the Joseon Dynasty policy, The Hwaeom Contest and Lecture in Yeondam improved the quality of Seung-ga University education and brought about the institutional development of Buddhist education. In addition, the conversation with Confucianism provided an opportunity for Confucian scholars to encounter Buddhism, which had a positive effect on the religious culture.

연담은 평생을 학문연구와 수행에만 정진한 뛰어난 학승으로 18세에 법천사로 출가한 후에 『화엄경』, 『능엄경』, 『금강경』 등 다양한 경전들에 대한 깊은 통찰로 당대의 유명한 선승이었으며, 화엄대회 등 다양한 활동으로 퇴락해가는 조선후기 불교계에 크게 영향을 미쳤다. 연담은 전라도와 경상도의 여러 사찰에서 수행하며, 보림사, 대흥사, 미황사 및 법천사 등의 사찰에서 30여 년간 강의를 하면서 수많은 후학을 양성하면서 수많은 경전의 해설서를 저술하였고, 이것은 조선후기 불교학의 이론적 체계를 확립하는 계기가 되었다. 특히 화엄학에 대한 연구를 발전시켜서 화엄학 연구를 집대성하였으며, 오늘날까지 사찰에서 통용되는 경전에 대한 해설서 특히 화엄학에 대한 주해는 연담의 저술에 기초하고 있다. 조선시대의 숭유억불정책으로 인한 불교의 쇠퇴에도 불구하고 연담의 화엄대회와 강설은 승가대학 교육의 질을 향상시키고 불교교육의 제도적인 발전을 가져왔다. 또한 연담의 유교와의 화회 등으로 유가학자들에게 불교를 접할 수 있는 계기를 마련하여서 종교의 화회에 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다. 이러한 연담의 사상과 저술들은 『한불전』에 수록되었고 연담의 저술들은 『사집』과 『사기』로 편찬되어 현재에도 불교계에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다.
