Wang Shen left behind the two surviving paintings, Misty River and Layered Peaks and Light Snow on a Fishing Village, which are not enough to know his true features as a painter and art collector, even though there are not a few paintings which are listed on Xuanhe Painting Catalogue. However, the poems-on-paintings works that Su Shi, one of the most accomplished figures in the Song dynastic era, produced give us a window from which we can see his relationships with prominent literati and his political setbacks. The handscroll in the Shanghai Museum called Misty River and Layered Peaks shows us more than the painter himself. It tells us another two literary persons, Wang Gong as a collector and Su Shi, who wrote the poems-on-Paintings on the work. The handscroll Misty River and Layered Peaks reflected the melancholy of these three people who had much in common with the political scandal and exile. We can see how, through colored landscape paintings kept in Hall of Treasured Paintings, Wang Shen evaluated Li Cheng who accomplished the monumental style of landscape paintings. We can also know how Wang Shen, who inherited the levelled-off perspective, one of the traditional way of painting, tried to find his way of painting. Another notable aspect is ‘Reception Esthetics’ that Wang Shen shows not only between painting and poetry but also between a creator and a receiver.

왕선은 『선화화보』에 전하는 작품이 여럿 있지만, <연강첩장도>와 <소설어촌도>만이 현존할 뿐, 화가와 소장가로서 그의 면모를 알 수 있는 길은 그리 많지 않다. 그런데 소식이 남긴 제화시를 보면, 문화적 교류와 정치적 좌절을 함께 경험한 화가 왕선을 만날 수 있다. <연강첩장도>를 통해서는 <연강첩장도>를 그린 화가 왕선, 그것을 보고 소장한 왕공, 그 풍경을 시로 묘사한 시인 소식, 이 세 사람을 이어주는 유배라는 공통된 좌절의 경험을 화가 또한 인지하고 이를 표현하고자 했음을 알 수 있다. 보회당에 소장된 여러 <채색산수화>를 통해서는 원근과 깊이가 표현된 대관산수를 완성한 산수화의 거장 이성에 대한 왕선의 평가와, 화면을 아득하게 보이도록 만드는 ‘평원법’의 전통을 계승한 왕선을 조명함으로써 산수화의 전통과 변화가 왕선 시대에는 어떻게 수용되었는지를 간접적으로 보여준다. 왕선의 시의도를 통해서는 시에서 그림으로, 다시 그림에서 시로 이어지며 시대를 달리해서도 시인과 화가가 창작자와 감상자로 수시로 전환되며 예술적 공동체를 완성해가는 모습을 발견할 수 있다.
