Frida Kahlo is a representative female painter of Mexico in the 20th century, known to the public for her unique portraits and superhuman life. This study focuses on discriminatory formative elements appearing in her self-portrait and attempts to grasp the common categories and grounds of the expression method in her works. The purpose of the study is to reflect the artist's consciousness and message inherent in the depths of her work from a new perspective thereby. This study viewed the strange and heterogeneous way of expression that appears in Frida Kahlo's self-portraits as an ontological strategy that gives a new identity to her existence and works of art and analyzed it from the perspective of grotesque aesthetics. From the analysis, the characteristics of grotesque corresponding to demeaning and mockery were not found, but it was found that it is composed of the features of 'uncanny', which means strange familiarity while causing anxiety and discomfort, 'deformed body' that embodies her own body and mind that has become heterogeneous, and “abjection,” which is on the border between existence and non-existence and on the border between beauty and ugliness, as a lowly being. These elements express on one hand the anxiety and fear that a disabled woman of the third world feels in front of the world, and on the other hand, express an existential determination to establish herself in the world by affirming her existence even in the desperate situation. Therefore, it can be appreciated that Frida Kahlo, in her peculiar self-portrait, tries to dismantle her self-centric and narcissistic subject, revealing a divided world, and expanding the object and horizon for expression in contemporary art.

프리다 칼로(Frida Kahlo)는 20세기 멕시코의 대 표적 여성 화가로서, 독특한 스타일의 자화상과 초인 적인 삶으로 대중들에게 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 그녀의 자화상에 나타나는 변별적인 조형적 요소들에 주목하고 작품 표현방식의 공통범주와 근거에 대해 파악해보고자 한다. 이를 통해 작품의 심층에 내재되 어 있는 작가의 의식과 메시지를 새로운 시각에서 성 찰함을 연구의 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 프리다 칼 로의 자화상에 나타나는 기이하고도 이질적인 표현방 식을 자신의 존재와 예술작품에 새로운 정체성을 부 여하는 존재론적 전략이라고 보고 이를 그로테스크 미학의 관점으로 분석해보았다. 분석 결과 그녀의 작 품에서는 비하와 조롱에 해당되는 그로테스크의 특징 은 발견되지 않았고, 불안감과 불편함을 야기하면서 기이한 친숙함을 의미하는 ‘언캐니(uncanny)’, 육 체를 심하게 변형함으로써, 이질화 된 자신의 몸과 마음을 형상화하는 ‘기형적 신체’, 그리고 존재와 비존재, 미와 추의 경계선상에 있는 비천한 존재인 ‘아브젝시옹(abjection)’이라는 특징들로 구성됨을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 요소들은 한편으로는 세계 앞 에서 느끼는 제 3세계의 장애인 여성의 불안과 공포 를 표현하고 다른 한편으로는 절망적 상황에도 불구 하고 자신의 존재를 긍정하며 세계 내에 스스로를 정 립하는 실존적 결의를 표현하고 있다. 그렇기에 프리 다 칼로의 특이한 자화상에서는 자기중심적이고 나르 시즘적 주체를 해체하고 분열된 세계를 드러내며 현 대 예술에서 표현의 소재와 지평을 확대한다는 의의 를 찾을 수 있다.
