International politics as an independent discipline takes 'anarchy' as a constant, which is a foundation established on the 'state borders'. And international politics takes the core variables as the 'powers' of realism, the 'institutions' of liberalism, the 'thoughts' of reflectivism, and the 'classes' of Marxism. Furthermore, it aims to intervene in the issues surrounding war and peace, conflict and cooperation, based on the perspective of each of schools which are obsessed with these core variables. And the driving force for the growth of international politics had been the debates among schools that had been sharply opposed. The academic growth of international politics, symbolized by the so-called the Great Debates, had been the processes of defining new state borders. Among the Great Debates, the points that are directly connected to this study are the second and third debates. This study focuses on both the debate on the methods of research between behavioralism and realism, and the debate on the ways of thought between positivism and post-positivism. Based on this, it examines the processes of defining new 'state borders' through an analysis of the three levels of international politics.

독자적 분과 학문으로서의 국제정치학은 국가적 경계라는 기저 위에 수립된 무정부성이라는 토대를 상 수로 하여, 현실주의의 권력, 자유주의의 제도, 사회적 구성주의를 포함한 성찰주의의 관념, 그리고 마르크 스주의의 계급이라는 핵심적 변수들에 천착한 개별 학파들의 관점에서 전쟁과 평화, 갈등과 협력을 진단하 고 처방하는 학문으로서 성장해 왔으며, 그 성장의 동력은 첨예한 대립을 기반으로 치열하게 전개되었던 학 파 간 논쟁이었다. 이른바, 대논쟁들로 표상되는 국제정치학의 발전적 전개 과정은 역사적 사실을 통하여 확 보된 기존의 국가적 경계 개념 위에 학술적 기제를 통하여 구획된 새로운 국가적 경계를 획정하는 과정이었 다. 여기에서 본 연구와 직결되는 논쟁의 지점은 제2차 논쟁과 제3차 논쟁이 된다. 본 연구에서는 행태주의 와 전통주의 간의 연구 방법 논쟁과 실증주의와 탈실증주의 간의 사유 방식 논쟁이라는 양자의 구도 속에서 표출되었던 국제정치학에 있어서의 세 가지 분석 수준, 즉 국가적 수준, 국제 체계적 수준, 그리고 지역적 수 준에 대한 고찰을 중심으로 새로운 국가적 경계의 획정 과정을 파악한다.
