This paper examines activities of Na Deok-heon as government official and posthumous conferment of honors using old documents on Na Deok-heon who was a member of the Na clan in Naju county. Na passed the gwageo examination for military officials during the years of King Seonjo. Then, he worked as seonjeongwan, and was promoted to dangsanggwan [the highest group of government officials] during the years of King Gwanghae. He served as county heads and military leaders. After the King Injo Restoration, he was conferred with Jinmuwonjong Vassal of Merit the First Class for suppressing the riot of Lee Gwal. He worked as heads of local counties in Pyeongan Province. He was appointed by the king as the Spring Envoy or the Fall Envoy to be sent a few times to Simyang, the capital of then Qing China. In particular, at the coronation ceremony of Emperor Taejong of Qing China, he refused to congratulate the new emperor. Afterwards, he was appointed as Samdo Tongeosa [the military commander of three provinces], rebuilding the Navy, and constructing the Cheonggot Base. He took charge of the duty of supporting the envoy of Qing China. After he died, the government conferred him with posthumous honorary government positions two times, and awarded him with honorary title ‘Chungyeol'.

본 논문은 나주 나주나씨 나덕헌 고문서를 통해 나덕헌의 관직 활동과 사 후에 顯揚 과정을 살펴보았다. 나덕헌은 선조 연간에 무과에 합격한 후에 선 전관을 역임하였고, 광해군 연간에 당상관이 되었으며, 지방 수령과 군사지휘 관으로 활동하였다. 인조반정 이후에 이괄의 난을 진압한 공으로 진무원종1 등공신에 녹훈되었으며, 평안도 지역의 지방 수령을 역임하였다. 春信使･秋信 使에 임명되어 사신으로 심양에 몇 차례 다녀왔으며, 특히 청 태종의 즉위식 에서 하례를 거부하였다. 이후 삼도통어사에 임명되어 통어영의 수군을 재건 하고 鐵串鎭을 설치하였으며, 청의 칙사를 지원하는 임무를 담당하였다. 나덕 헌 사후에 조정에서는 청 태종에게 하례를 거부한 공으로 두 차례 관직을 올 려 追贈하고 ‘忠烈’의 諡號를 내리며 旌閭를 세워 현양하였다.
