Following the spread of Buddhism during the Three Kingdoms period, monk painters were tasked with the jobs of dancheong (the art of decorative coloring on wooden buildings and artifacts) and painting, decorated Buddhist temples, and created paintings for Buddhist services. Those responsibilities were handed down to modern-era monk painters. While their main job was to create Buddhist-themed paintings, those monk painters also had the ability to create paintings in other areas. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the folk paintings created by these monk painters, which stems from the clear similarities in subject matter and techniques between temple murals and those folk paintings created from the 19th to 20th centuries, in addition to the general elements of painting. The remaining records and artworks related to some of those monk painters confirmed that they had abilities in the area of general painting, as well as in Buddhist-themed paintings. Some of the examples found also reveal that the painters created artworks using subjects and techniques that pertained to the area of folk painting. The existing definitive records and artworks, however, indicate that the paintings created by monk painters for the purposes of enshrinement and decoration in temples only partially show the motifs and techniques specific to folk painting that were in vogue at the time. Other than that, there is little to no specific evidence that monk painters took the lead or were actively involved in the creation of folk paintings for purposes other than religious worship outside of their temples. This is probably because those monk painters regarded painting as the chief way to seek the truth or enlightenment as practitioners, to practice good deeds, or to propagate Buddhism.

화승(畵僧)들은 삼국시대 불교가 전래된 이래 사찰 내 단청 및 회화를 담당하며 불전(佛殿)을 장엄하고, 예배용 불화를 제작하였다. 이러한 활동은 근대기 화승들에게까지 지속되었으며, 화승들은 불교 주제의 그림들을 주로 제작하면서도 그밖에 다른 분야의 그림들도 그릴 수 있는 회화적 역량을 갖추었던 것으로 추정된다. 불화에 보이는 일반회화적 요소들과 함께 사찰벽화에 보이는 화제(畵題)나 표현기법들이 19-20세기에 제작된 민화(民畵)와의 분명한 공통점이 있음을 들어 최근에는 화승들의 민화 제작에 관해서도 관심이 대두되었다. 화승들 가운데 일부는 남아있는 기록이나 작품을 통해 불교 주제 이외에 일반회화의 영역도 그려낼 수 있는 역량이 있었음을 확인하였고, 민화의 영역에 해당하는 주제와 기법으로 작품을 제작한 몇몇 사례도 확인하였다. 다만, 현재로서는 명확한 기록과 작품에 의거해 본다면, 사찰 내에서 봉안과 장엄을 위해 화승들이 제작한 회화 중에 당시 유행했던 민화의 모티프들과 표현기법들이 부분적으로 보이는 것 외에 사찰 밖에서 화승들이 주도적으로 혹은 종교 이외의 목적을 가지고 민화를 적극적으로 제작했던 구체적 증거를 찾아보기는 쉽지 않다. 이는 아마도 화승들 역시 수행자로서 구도(求道)의 방편으로서, 그리고 한편으로는 공덕을 위해, 또한 포교를 위한 회화활동이 가장 주요했기 때문일 것이다.
