A critical biography is a critical writing about a character based on the materials of his life. In particular, the success of a review about a historical figure depends largely on reconciling the differences between the factual objectivity of life materials and the subjectivity of the critic's interpretations. In this article, we analyzed three books about Jeon Bong-Jun, the leader of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, to explore the issue of historical interpretation and how we can write his biography to extend Donghak's scope. The books selected for analysis are Critical Biography of Jeon Bong-jun (1996) by Shin Bok-Ryong, Critical Biography of Nokdu Jeon Bong-jun (2007) by Kim Sam-woong, and Jeon Bong-jun, Record of Revolution (2014) by Lee Yi-hwa. Our study went as follows. First, we examined the concept and significance of critical biography and presented the problem of objectivity in the interpretation of history. In the analysis of critical biographies of Jeon Bong-jun we summarized the characteristics of the three books, focusing on the purposes of writing the biographies, the views on Jeon Bong-jun's personality, leadership, table of contents, major issues, and appendices. Finally, we suggested as ways of writing a biography for Donghak expansion exploring various ways of improving the readability of biographies, making the most of the advantages of biography form, stronger portrayals of Jeon Bong-jun's ideas and personality, and re-establishing Jeon Bong-jun's views of the world.

평전은 생애자료에 근거하여 인물을 평가하는 글쓰기이다. 특히 역사적 인물에 대한 평전은 생애자료의 사실적 객관성과 평론 작가의 해석의 주관성의 차이를 어느 정도 극복하느냐에 따라 그 성공 여부가 결정된다. 이 글에서는 동학농민혁명 지도자인 전봉준을 다룬 세 권의 평전을 분석하면서 역사 해석의 문제와 동학 확장을 위한 평전 집필의 방향을 탐색하고자 하였다. 분석 대상으로 선택한 책은 신복룡의 『전봉준 평전』(1996), 김삼웅의 『녹두 전봉준 평전』(2007), 그리고 이이화의 『전봉준, 혁명의 기록』(2014)이다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 평전의 개념과 의의를 살펴보고 역사 해석의 객관성 문제를 제시하였다. 전봉준 평전 분석에서는 평전 집필의 목적, 전봉준의 인물평, 리더십, 목차, 주요 쟁점, 부록을 중심으로 세 권의 평전의 특징을 제시하였다. 마지막으로 동학 확장을 위한 평전 집필의 방향으로, 가독성을 높이기 위한 다양한 방법을 모색해야 한다는 점, 평전의 장점을 활용해야 한다는 점, 전봉준 사상과 인물 묘사가 강화되어야 한다는 점, 그리고 전봉준의 세계상을 정립해야 한다는 점을 제시하였다.
