We realized that Miss Snail of Korea and Man married toad of Vietnam belonged to the same type as Man in disguise or Men married animals. They are similar in terms of motifs which created a plot but they are different from each other in terms of position and function of motifs. These motifs are considered as units which created folktales by a structural and functional analysis. In other words, based on a theory of structure- function, we will consider these motifs as functions of activity of characters in magical folktales. Approaching and studying folktales this way can reveal the role and the value of motifs existing in the plot as a unit, that is, a component that makes up a whole. At the same time, through the method, we can find out how those motifs as traditional factors operate and change within the framework of producing the content of two stories above-mentioned. In this article we apply the research method of poetic structuralism to understanding and comparing the structure - the functions of the three motifs associated with the three functions that appear in the story of Miss Snail and Man married toad, then try to give some assumptions on their historical and social origins in the lives of each ethnicity according to the theory of poetic historicallism. These motifs - functions are: (1) Motif of disguise - function of introducing the character's origin; (2) Motif of challenge - auxiliary function of magical characters and objects; and (3) Motif of undressing - character recognition function.

한국 <우렁각시> 설화와 베트남 <개구리각시> 설화는 동물 변신담(變身譚), 또 는 인간과 동물 결혼담 유형에 속한다. 두 설화는 이야기를 구성하는 화소(話素)가 유사하지만 화소의 위치와 기능에 차이가 있다. 필자는 이 화소들을 구조적ㆍ기능적 분석에 의하여 민담을 구성하는 단위로 본다. 즉, 구조 및 기능의 이론에 기초하여 신이한 설화 속 인물들의 활동적 기능으로 이 화소들을 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 방식으로 민담의 화소에 접근하여 연구하면 전체의 구성 요소인 단위로서 플롯을 형성하는 화소들의 역할 및 가치를 보여 줄 수 있다. 동시에 그 화소들을 전통적 요소로서 위에 언급된 두 설화의 내용을 구성하는 데에 어떻게 적용하고 변이되었는 지 확인할 수 있다. 본고에서는 구조에 대한 연구방법론을 <우렁각시>와 <개구리각시>에 나타난 세 가지 기능과 관련된 세 가지 화소의 구조-기능의 이해와 비교에 적용한다. 그리고 역사적 이론을 통해 각 국가의 생활에서 이들의 역사적․사회적 기원에 대해 몇 가지 의견을 제시해 보고자 한다. 세 가지 화소와 해당 기능은 1) 위장 화소 - 인 물의 출생 기원의 소개 기능, 2) 시련 화소 - 조력자와 조력물의 기능, 3) 변신 화 소- 인물 외모의 기능이다.
