This is a study of an experience-type soundscape installation (2018), which is composed from the sound of passing cars. This work of art is a sound art piece in which field-recorded sound clips of passing cars are installed and played in a large volume for the participant to experience. This work can be classified as a sound installation piece which forms a non-site non-place environment via mixing an abstract gallery space with the site-specific realistic sounds of passing cars. This work can also be classified as a soundscape art piece in a semi-virtual space which is formed by randomly mixing various audio clips of passing cars recorded at various sites from various takes. This work especially strives to constitute an experience-type environment which lets the listener experience the sound instead of just simply listening to it by controlling the elements of installation, including the way the sound fills are played and the listening space, as well as the relationship between the sound and the listener. At the thematic level, this work finds its basis in John Cage’s Zen thoughts on sound and life and aims to provide an embodied experience for the participant in life’s essence, which here is an eternal continuation of the passing of uncontrollable energy, by hearing ironically enough the ordinary sounds of passing cars. This work uses computer programming to play the audio clips in a random manner to ensure that the situation is not predetermined and is unpredictable, like life itself, which it symbolizes and embodies. This piece was completed and shown at ICMC 2018.

본 연구는 체험형 사운드스케이프 설치작품 (2018)을 설명하는 작품논문이다. 본 작품은 도로에 자동차들이 지나가 는 소리를 녹음하여 큰 음량으로 재생하고 이를 청취자가 듣는 체험을 하도록 하는 사운드 아트 작품이다. 본 작업은 소리를 내용으로 하는 사운드 아트 작업이며 그중에서도 소리와 결합된 공간을 형성하는 설치작업으로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 여러 차례의 현장 녹음에서 얻은 소리 클립들이 컴퓨터 프로그래밍을 통해 정해진 순서가 없이 예측할 수 없는 방식으로 끝 없이 재생되는 공간을 구성했다. 본 작업은 이를 통해 형성되는 비장소 가상공간의 사운드스케이프에 관한 작업으로도 설명 될 수 있는데, 특히 소리가 공간을 채우는 방식, 소리와 청자의 배치 관계 등의 요소를 통해 듣는 이로 하여금 소리를 단순히 듣는 것을 넘어 체험하도록 하는 상황을 구성하는 데 중점을 두었다. 주제적으로는 존 케이지의 소리에 대한 사유의 연장선에 서 자동차들이 운행하는 일상적인 소리로부터 우리들 삶의 본질이 끊임없이 다가오고 지나가는 현상 속에 있음을 소리를 통 해 체험하도록 하고자 했다. 본 작품은 완성되어 ICMC 2018에서 전시되었다.
