This study analyzed the trend of regional studies for the recent ten years in Changwon after launching a consolidated administrative district. This study defined regional research as entire academic research targeting specific activities or groups within a particular region and identified the trend of recent research papers in Changwon. Through this process, the study examined how Changwon is recognized internally/externally after administrative consolidation and which direction Changwon’s regionality forms. Regular papers registered in the Korean academic journal citation index(KCI) from 2010 to 2019 were reviewed for the analysis. In the past ten years, more than 30 research papers about Changwon’s regional studies have been successfully conducted per year based on Social Sciences centering around regional planning and public administration and Humanities centering around history. Masan region was investigated remarkably on a local basis, and the characteristics of administrative district consolidation and maritime cities were examined prominently on a content basis. In particular, researchers affiliated with and funded by local universities have made successful results. However, the result of this study shows that the current regional research in Changwon has been stalled or declined, although increased attention and issues in the region. Significantly, the number of successful research results largely fluctuated due to reduced studies in the humanities field and lack of attention to administrative district consolidation. In other words, Changwon has not yet discovered new flows of regional studies and new localities after administrative district consolidation. It entails a difficulty of vitalizing Changwon’s regional studies. Henceforth, an establishment of a systemically combined new locality emerging after administrative district consolidation should be preceded. Particularly, contemplating regionality reflecting the diverse spatial characteristics of present living space as a metropolis of a million population is needed. In addition, vigorous support, such as diverse support projects and construction of research databases, should be employed in order to bring external and new researchers consistently and engage researchers’ interest in Changwon.

본 연구는 통합 창원시 출범 이후 최근 10년간 ‘창원’이라는 지역이 연구대상으로서 어떠한 관점과 주제로 다루어졌는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구에서는 ‘지역연구’를 지역 내 에서 이루어진 특정 활동이나 집단을 대상으로 한 학술연구 전체로 정의하고, 창원이라 고 하는 지역적 범위를 대상으로 한 연구 현황과 변화의 동향 전반을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 행정구역 통합 이후의 창원시를 내·외부적으로 어떻게 인식하고 있으며 통합 창원시의 지역성이 어떠한 방향으로 형성되는지를 살펴보았다. 분석에 활용된 지역연 구 성과는 2010년부터 2019년까지 총 10년간 한국학술지인용색인에 등록된 정규논문을 대상으로 하였다. 최근 10년간 창원 지역연구는 지역개발 관련 분야와 행정학을 중심으 로 한 사회과학과 역사학 중심의 인문학 등을 기반으로 연간 30편 이상의 연구 성과를 보 이고 있다. 지역적으로는 마산, 내용적으로는 행정구역 통합과 마산만, 항만 등의 연안 해양도시의 특성이 연구 동향에서 두드러지며, 특히 지역 내 주요 대학의 연구비 지원을 받은 지역 대학 소속의 연구자들이 활발하게 연구 성과를 도출하고 있었다. 하지만 여러 관심과 이슈에도 불구하고 최근의 창원 지역연구는 양적 측면에서 대체적으로 정체 내 지는 침체되는 경향을 보였으며, 특히 인문학 분야의 감소와 행정구역 통합 등에 대한 관 심이 줄어들면서 특정한 주제나 지역특성이 부각되지 않아 시기별로 연구 성과의 변동 성이 크게 나타났다. 즉 아직까지 창원시는 행정구역에 따른 지역성의 새로운 변화양상 이나 이에 따른 지역연구의 새로운 흐름이 전개되지 않고 있으며 이로 인해 지역연구의 활성화에 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 향후 창원 지역연구의 활성화를 위해서는 통합 이후 유 기적으로 결합된 새로운 지역성의 확립이 선행되어야 하며, 특히 100만 대도시로서의 현 재의 다양한 삶의 공간 특성을 반영한 지역성을 고민하여야 한다. 또한 외부 연구자와 신규 연구자들을 지속적으로 유입시킬 수 있는 여러 가지 지원사업의 모색과 지역자료 구 득을 위한 연구데이터베이스 구축 등을 통해 새로운 연구자들이 창원이라는 지역 자체 에 관심을 가지고 접근할 수 있도록 적극적으로 지원할 필요가 있다.
