One of the important characteristics of education in Korea is the high proportion of private schools. In particular, private schools could not avoid becoming involved in Korea’s equalization policy for school admission, because the proportion of private schools was especially high in the case of middle and high schools. The high ratio of private schools is one of the reasons that the government has recently pursued the publicization of private schools. This study focuses on the expansion of private schools and its cause, and analyzes the time, quantity, and influencing factors of Christian private school expansion. This study first describes the definition and the characteristics of Christian private schools, and divides the history of Christian private schools after Korea’s liberation in 1945 into 4 periods: the foundation period (1945- 1960), expansion period (1961-1975), transition period (1976-2016), and conflict period (2017-present). This study also analyses the expansion of private schools and Christian private schools as a phenomenon according to each period, and discusses its causes. The outcome of this study shows that most Christian private schools were founded in the expansion period from 1961 up until the equalization policy for high schools in 1974, and the establishment of Christian private schools decreases in number rapidly after that period. General factors of the expansion of Christian private schools include the rapid growth of the child population, the educational motivation of parents, the government policies encouraging the founding of private schools at the middle and high school levels, and changes in educational policy including entrance examinations. Factors particular to the expansion of Christian private schools include the rapid growth of a young Christian population, the participation of churches in the establishment of Christian schools, and the rising interest of Christian businesspeople in a commitment to Christian educational work.

한국교육의 중요한 특징 중의 하나는 사립학교의 비중이 크다는 점이 다. 특히 중,고등학교의 경우 사립학교의 비중이 크기 때문에 평준화 시 행 때에도 사립학교를 포함할 수밖에 없었다. 최근에 사립학교의 준공립 화 또는 사립학교 공영화를 주장하는 이유도 사립학교의 비중이 크기 때문 이다. 본 연구는 사립학교의 팽창 현상과 그 요인에 주목하면서, 특히 기독 교사립학교가 언제, 어느 정도 팽창되었으며, 그 요인은 무엇인지를 분석 하려고 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 기독교사립학교의 정의와 성격을 규명하고, 해방 이후 기독교사립학교의 역사를 정초기(1945-1960), 확산기(1961- 1975), 전환기(1976-2016), 갈등기(2017-현재)의 네 시기로 구분하며, 각 시기에 따른 사립학교 및 기독교사립학교의 팽창 현상을 파악하고, 그 팽창의 요인을 분석하려고 한다. 연구 결과에 의하면 기독교사립학교는 확 산기인 1961년부터 고교 평준화가 시행되는 때까지의 시기에 가장 많이 설 립되었으며, 그 이후에는 급격하게 설립이 감소되었다. 이 시기 기독교사 립학교 팽창의 일반요인으로는 아동인구의 급증, 부모의 교육열, 국가의 사학장려정책, 국가의 교육정책을 들 수 있으며, 기독교적 특수요인으로는 기독교인 아동 수의 급증, 교회의 기독교학교설립, 기독교육영사업의 확대 등으로 분석되었다.
