School unification education has an effect on understanding unification issues. This study analyzes music textbooks based on the 2013 music curriculum of North Korea and the 2015 revised music curriculum of South Korea for mutual understanding between the South and the North concerning Korean music education in preparation for unification. The following are the patterns of homogeneity and heterogeneity derived from the analysis. Firstly, there is ideological heterogeneity in the educational goals of South and North Korea, but they are common in that students are instructed to experience the beauty of music or acquire the intrinsic characteristics of arts through school music education. Secondly, in the music curriculum, the South and the North are similar in that they determine instructional contents and suggest advanced learning according to each school(school district)’s functions centered on the areas. When comparing the content elements of Korean music with Western music, the content of South Korea is specific, whereas that of North Korea is relatively simple. Thirdly, the analysis of Korean music education in South and North Korea through music textbooks reveals that there is a gap in Korean music education and its content between the South and the North as the North altered jangdan(rhythmic cycles) and had students adapt a modified singing style of folk music rather than using traditional Korean music grammar. In preparation for unification, it is hoped that this study will help understand the Korean music education of North Korea and its content and reduce the gap between the contents that the South and North teach differently in terms of Korean music education.

학교 통일교육은 통일문제 이해에 영향을 미친다. 본 연구에서는 통일을 대비한 국악 교육 과 관련하여 남ㆍ북한 상호이해를 위해 북한의 2013 음악과 교육과정과 남한의 2015 개정 음악과 교육과정에 근거하여 음악 교과서를 분석하고 다음과 같은 동질성과 이질성을 도출 하였다. 첫째, 남ㆍ북한의 학교 교육목표에는 사상적 이질성이 있으나, 학교 음악교육을 통하 여 음악의 아름다움을 경험하고 예술의 고유한 특성을 체득하도록 하는 점에서는 공통점이 있다. 둘째, 음악과 교육과정에서는 남ㆍ북한이 영역을 중심으로 학교(급)별로 기능에 따라 내용을 정하고 심화 학습하도록 제시한 점은 비슷하나, 국악의 내용 요소가 서양악과 비교하 여 남한의 내용은 구체적이라면 북한은 그렇지 않다. 셋째, 교과서의 내용을 중심으로 남ㆍ북한의 국악 교육을 분석한 결과, 북한은 전통적인 국악의 어법을 그대로 사용하기보다는 장단을 변형하고, 민요풍의 노래를 만들어 변형된 창법으로 노래하게 하는 등 남한의 국악 교육 및 그 내용과 간극이 있다. 본 연구가 통일을 대비하여 북한의 국악 교육과 그 내용을 이해하고, 국악 교육적 측면에서 남ㆍ북이 다르게 가르치고 있는 내용을 줄이기 위한 노력에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
