America's Ivana Chubbuck is a highly influential acting coach in Hollywood and director of Ivana Chubbuck Studio. Having coached Hollywood stars such as Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Jim Carrey. she is being called Hollywood's ‘celebrity whisperer.’ Building on the acting theories of Stanislavski and Strasberg, she developed her own distinctive, unique, and unprecedented acting theory, which presents detailed acting methodologies that teach actors how to create organic fear, portray substance abusers, create sexual chemistry, play a serial killer, experience feeling pregnant, create death and dying, etc. so that they can act out such scenes. This paper discusses the characteristics of the ‘Chubbuck Technique,' the prevailing modern acting technique, and compares how her theory differentiates from the traditional acting theory. Out of all the acting methodologies she proposes, those that relate to fear, sexual chemistry with examples to help better understand her acting technique. Although Chubbuck does not clearly distinguish between screen acting and stage acting, she actively takes into consideration the extreme content that dominates today's video media and how fragmented, sculpted, and dispersed the acting becomes. Chubbuck's segmentalized, distinct acting techniques interpret and reflect today's trends. In other words, one could say that her acting technique is an outcome that reflects the characteristics of these specific contemporary narratives. Thus, this paper introduces Ivana Chubbuck's acting technique, which has not yet been introduced in Korea, as well as explores how she is expressing and developing her theory by comparing it with traditional acting theories. The paper will also discuss the characteristics of acting required by modern video media and the meaning behind this.

미국의 이바나 처벅(Ivana Chubbuck)은 현재 헐리우드에서 상당한 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 연기 교육자 이자 이바나 처벅 스튜디오의 감독이다. 그녀는 샤를리즈 테론, 브레드 피트, 할리 베리, 짐 캐리 등 헐리우 드의 명실상부한 스타 배우들의 연기를 지도하면서 ‘헐리우드의 비밀병기’로 불리고 있는 인물이다. 그녀 는 스타니슬랍스키와 스트라스버그의 연기이론의 영향 아래 놓이면서도 다른 연기 교육자들이 제시하지 않았던 자신만의 독자적이고 독특한 연기이론을 주장하게 되는데, 공포, 약물 중독, 섹슈얼 케미스트리, 연 쇄 살인범, 임신, 죽음 등의 특정 장면의 존재를 연기하기 위한 세부적인 연기 방법론들을 제시한다. 본 논 문에서는 현대적인 연기이론을 대표하고 있는 ‘처벅 테크닉(Chubbuck Technique)’의 특징적인 부분과 그녀 의 이론이 전통적인 연기이론과 어떻게 차별화되는지를 비교를 통해 논하며, 그녀의 연기술의 이해를 돕기 위해 그녀가 제시한 연기 방법론 중 공포, 섹슈얼 케미스트리에 대한 연기 방법론을 예를 들어 설명한다. 처벅은 매체의 성질의 차이에 따른 영화에서의 연기와 연극에서의 연기의 차이를 명확하기 구분하지는 않 았지만, 오늘날 영상매체에서 주를 이루는 극단적인 내용들, 파편화되고 조각되며 분산되는 연기의 내용들 을 적극적으로 반영하고 있다. 이러한 조건들 안에서는 보다 세밀하고 섬세한 연기가 요구되며, 처벅의 독 창적이고 세분화된 연기술은 현대의 이러한 구체적인 서사의 특징들이 반영된 결과물이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 국내에 아직 소개되지 않은 이바나 처벅의 연기 방법론을 소개하고 전통적인 연기이론과 의 비교를 통해 그녀가 어떻게 자신의 이론을 개진하고 발전시키고 있는지, 더불어 현대의 영상매체에서 요구하고 있는 연기의 특징들과 그녀의 연기 방법론이 지니는 의미를 논하고자 한다.
