Just as human beings are essentially historical beings, human gazes have different possibilities and roles depending on historical, technical and sociocultural conditions. In this sense of problem, this article analyzes how the relation between visual media and historical construction of gaze is discussed in the theories of the classical media theorists of the early 20th century, S. Kracauer, B. Balázs and W. Benjamin. The ideological and philosophical fundaments of the three thinkers and the way they explain the sociocultural and aesthetic functions of photography and film show some considerable differences. Nevertheless, in common, they argue that it is necessary to elaborate on the fact that popular visual media is not just a means of communication of images, and on the fact that it revolutionizes the way of existence and function of human gaze. The major arguments they have elucidated still give important theoretical implications for contemporary aesthetic reflections on gaze and visual media.

인간이 역사적 존재인 것처럼, 인간의 시선도 역사적, 기술적, 사회문화적 조건에 따라 그 가능성과 역할이 달라진다. 이러한 문제의식에서 이 글은 20세기 전반의 고전적 매체이론가들인 크라카우어, 발라쉬, 벤야민의 이론에서 영상매체와 시선의 역사적 구성이 어떻게 논의되고 있는가를 분석한다. 세 사상가의 사상적, 철학적 토대와 사진과 영화의 사회문화적, 미학적 기능을 설명하는 방식은 적지 않은 차이점을 보여준다. 그럼에도 이들은 공통적으로, 대중적 영상매체가 단지 이미지의 소통 수단이 아니라는 점, 그리고 인간의 시선의 존재방식과 기능방식을 혁명적으로 변화시킨다는 점을 이론적으로 엄밀하게 해명하고자 한다. 세 사상가가 제시한 주요 논점들은 시선과 영상매체에 관한 현대의 미학적 성찰에 여전히 중요한 이론적 시사점을 던져주고 있다.
