This paper aims to search for Ahn, Kyu-Yong’s academic orientation and historical role from the viewpoint of confucian intellectual. He pursues life suitable for times from time and place that national pride and moral order be collapsed by foreign invasion and the decapitation of Japanese imperialism. HoeBong’s academic world orient practical life which cultivate substantiality on the basis of the mind of practice study is concluded to a sincere life. HoeBong’s practical philosophy is made up of the study of converging to substantiality from phenomenon and constant hard study. HeoBong seeks to be harmonized with a root and end, constant livelihood and constant mind. He underlined historical role of confucian intellectuals who widely prepared for food, clothing and wisdom. According to HoeBong, confucian intellectuals are persons who are exhaustive to practice benevolence and righteous. That is, They are autonomous beings who practice the righteous in accordance with the circumstance to lived a secluded life but defend himself for oneself carefully under historical constraint. HoeBong expect hope for a new social order that he bring to educational commune in local community. HeoBong positively responded the realization of righteous suitable for times through an inclusive and firm will. In conclusion, HeoBong’s practical life were more focusing on defending himself for oneself; not place a priority on a secluded life and realizes educational commune in social dimension.

이 글은 외세의 침략과 일제의 침탈로 민족적 자존감이 무너지고 도의적 질서가 붕괴된 시·공간에서 ‘시의에 맞는 의로움’을 추구했던 회봉 안규용의 학문적 지향과 유교지식인으로서 시대적 역할을 살펴보는 데 목적은 둔다. 회봉의 학문세계는 『소학』의 실천정신을 바탕으로 본원을 함양하고 힘써 실천하는 삶을 지향한다. 그의 공부방법의 초점은 그침과 끊임이 없는 지속성·일관성에 맞춰져 있으며, 궁극적으로 성실한 삶으로 귀결된다. 회봉의 실천철학은 현상으로부터 실체로 수렴해 들어가는 공부, 쉼 없이 점진하는 연찬으로 이루어진다. 회봉은 근본과 말단, 항산(恒産)과 항심(恒心)이 조화를 이루는 삶을 추구했으며, 의식과 지식을 두루 갖춘 유교지식인의 시대적 역할을 강조했다. 유교지식인은 도덕과 인의의 실천에 철저한 사람으로 ‘시의에 알맞은 의로움’을 추구하는 주체적 존재다. 시대적 한계 속에서 은거하면서 스스로 조심하면서 자신을 지키는 삶을 택한 회봉은 지역에서 교육공동체를 이뤄 새로운 삶, 새로운 사회를 향한 희망을 싹틔웠다. 회봉은 포용적이면서 굳센 의지로 시대가 요청한 ‘시의에 맞는 의리’의 실현에 적극적으로 응답했다. 결국 그의 실천적 삶은 ‘은거’에 중점을 두기보다 ‘자수(自守)’의 경지를 지역의 교육공동체 구상과 교학 실천을 통해 사회적 삶의 영역으로 확장한 데 큰 의의가 있다.
